Back in the beginning of my time here, I did do favorite companion polls for each Doctor (Eight got two: one for audio, one for everything else, because he had too many) except for War (doesn’t really have any companions), Fourteen (doesn’t have very many stories) and Fifteen (has only had one companion thus far). There were also no limits so you could vote for as many as you wanted. Here are the links:

I don’t really have a set list of favorite companions but Ace, Donna, Amy & Rory, Hex, Valarie, Romana II and Jamie all rank pretty high.

I can’t really pin a reason past having the most interesting storylines or the most charm in my personal opinion.

But of course, the best companion is obvious…

Honestly I think she’s only gotten more my favorite since meeting Jenna.

I would go:

1 - Clara Oswald: I like how reckless she is, especially with the Twelfth Doctor. It’s interesting how travelling in the TARDIS becomes like an unhealthy addiction for Clara; she just can’t stop, and keeps taking risks until it kills her.

2 - Amy Pond: I admire her feistiness, and she had a great romance with Rory Williams. Her exit is also one of my favourites, choosing to be taken by the Weeping Angel because she can’t bear to live a life without Rory.

3 - Captain Jack Harkness: I’ve always been a fan of Jack. His tendency to flirt with anyone and anything makes me laugh, but he also has an intriguingly dark backstory, like how he sacrificed children to the 456, and had two years of his life taken away by the Time Agency.

4 - Donna Noble: She’s hilarious with the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors, but she also has a heart of gold. The scene where she pleads with the Doctor to ‘just save someone’ is one of the best companion moments in the show ever.

5 - Rose Tyler: I really like the arc Rose had with the Ninth Doctor, helping him heal from his wartime PTSD, whilst the Doctor gave her more confidence to stand up for what she believed in. I also think her romance with the Tenth Doctor is great as David Tennant and Billie Piper have a lot of chemistry, and it makes the way things end on Bad Wolf Bay all the more tragic.

I do like classic series companions as well, but IMO they are not as tightly written as the new series companions. We get to learn more about who the Doctor’s assistants are as people in the new series, as opposed to in the classic series, where the companions most of the time are just there to ask questions.

There are some that fit that description, but yeah, I’d agree. I think that’s a very common misconception of the classic Who companion.

Ooo, tough question, but giving it a think

  1. Clara: I think she’s just great, love her episodes, love the chemistry she has with Smith and Peter, I love how flawed she is (and she is very flawed). I’m also quite a fan of tragic/bittersweet endings, and I really love what Moffat did with her ending, it also got us the greatest episode of all time so it was a worthy sacrifice.
  2. Amy and Rory: The first face this face saw, Matt Smith was my first Doctor, so naturally Amy would be my first companion, I love her more “dominant” personality compared to previous companions, though clearly Moffat and I like it for different reasons smh. Rory is just a loveable dude, he just loves his wife, and who doesn’t love that. To me Rory is the soul of the group, he (almost) always advocates for helping out people and doing the right thing, this is at it’s best during the Almost People 2 parter, where Rory right from the start treated the duplicates as their own people and advocated for their right to live. Rory is just an all-around dependable dude who is ride or die and an outright badass, also he’s the pretty one.
    (The rest aren’t really ranked so don’t shoot me based on the positions.)
  3. Donna: Donna is just a fun companion who has amazing banter with 10, 10 and Donna are a dynamic duo that I adore and Donna is easily his best companion, I’m glad RTD made it very clear from the start of her run that there would be no romance between her and the Doctor, and unlike Moffat, actually stuck to it :laughing:. I have nothing against romance in Doctor Who, but I felt like the whole pining over Rose thing detracted from Martha’s time, so I’m glad Donna didn’t suffer the same fate.
  4. Bill: Ngl I was tossing up between Bill and Graham, but Bill won out, while Bill was initially a companion didn’t like on first watch through, mostly due to her more “quirky” personality and immediately following Clara’s exit, but I found on rewatches that her personality was actually a strength and resonated with me more. I think she brings a fresh air to Doctor Who and I really like the Teacher/Student dynamic between her and 12, and I love her ending.
  5. Ian and Barbara: The first ever TARDIS team, the first fam, these two are responsible for the Doctor being the person they are today. I adore Ian’s protective nature over everyone and how he’s not willing to put up with bs from the Doctor, but still greatly respects the man, and that respect is returned in kind. Barbara is more of a kind soul who encourages the Doctor to be kinder and treat people with respect, a very difficult task for a man with an ego the size of Jupiter, and always looks out for Susan. I think it says a lot of the impact these two had on the Doctor and how much he cares and respects the both of them as he was willing to leave Susan in the care of both of them if required.
