You're going to love this - A Fugitive Doctor Thread

With Coda just having come out, lots of people rewatching Power of the Doctor for the 61st Anniversary, her Big Finish series coming up soon, and the discussion about her in the War Games in Colour thread, I thought it might be an idea to have a thread about Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor!

What did you think about her when she was introduced?
What are your thoughts on Pre-Hartnell incarnations?
What do you think about her Characterisation?
Have you read the Fugitive Doctor Titan Comics mini series? (We’ve got a thread about it HERE
Are you excited for Most Wanted?

To be honest, the first thing I thought back in the day when she was first introduced as another Doctor was: “Oh no, not again! Not another War Doctor situation”. That was purely because I felt it unnecessary to further complicate the Doctor’s timeline and retcon their past.

It doesn’t bother me much anymore. The Fugitive is different enough from modern incarnations and has a cool, tough edge to her, and Jo Martin is great in the role. That’s all I can say so far because we haven’t seen a lot of her yet. I am excited to listen to Most Wanted, though, just to hear what BF does with the character. Coda was a promising appetizer of things to come!

I do love this, because she deserves more attention!

I really liked the reveal. The built up was great, and the red herring with her “companion” was well done. And once she was revealed she immediately felt like the Doctor. Her costume as well is just beautiful.
The only problem I’ve had with it, was that her TARDIS lookes like the classic police box. But I’ve since made some head-canon up that kind of atleast works.

I don’t mind pre-Hartnell incarnations at all. I don’t think it breaks anything in the lore or continuity.

I cannot speak about anything outside the show, but I like that she does feel a bit rougher and more arrogant? maybe.

Jo Martin sparkles in the role, she’s marvellous!

I’m neutral on the whole Timeless Children thing– I think it led to some pretty boring episodes, but the Fugitive Doctor was absolutely the best thing to come out of it (and Fugitive of the Judoon easily the best Timeless Children-related episode).

I think Jo Martin is good - although I have opinions on her performance is Coda - but what I’ve never subscribed to is the opinion that she is a better example of a female Doctor than Jodie. To me, in her TV episodes at least, she came across as a rather generic Doctor and certainly not a better actor than Jodie. I think I know what those fans who chime with that opinion might have been getting from Martin’s performance but it’s maybe a bit controversial to put in print…

Completely agree. The Fugitive Doctor is easily the best thing that came out of the Timeless Children, but I still prefer Jodie’s Doctor to her. You can say all you want about Chibnall (and I don’t even have a problem with Timeless Children, because it just establishes that there were Doctors before Hartnell, and that theory was boiling in the fandom since The Brain of Morbius). Fugitive Doctor is great, don’t get me wrong, I’m really looking forward to Jo Martin’s Big Finish episodes and sure am excited for her future appereances in the EU

I love the Fugitive Doctor because it was a genuine surprise in Chibnall’s era that came completely unexpectedly, it was the most exciting time in his era, and a brilliant performance by Jo Martin.

Also it was inspired to quickly add another female Doctor to the history because I really worry that it will be a long time until the next one and Jodie would have been the “odd one out”. Plus a woman of colour too, this era was the most diverse and I think that is so brilliant and so important.

I wish we’d seen more of her on TV, especially as the second and third time we see her she is first a memory and then a hologram :sob: so I’m looking forward to the audios the flesh her out.

But come on RTD and Disney, let’s have a TV spin-off! The Fugitive Doctor, on the run, how much fun would that be!

i really like her, i wish we’d seen more of her so i’m really glad she’s doing audios! i think jo martin would make a really excellent main doctor from what we’ve seen of her, to be honest, i’m sort of sad she’s on the sidelines. i don’t read a lot of comics or listen to a lot of audio but even if i don’t get around to reading/listening to her stuff i’m glad it exists.

I love her! Her reveal was a literal jaw dropping moment for me.

& then everything that came with it, The Division, Tecteun, The Timeless Child. Loved it all!

I hope we get something worthy of the character from BF.

I just hope her Big Finish era’s distinctive and her own, like 8’s

did anyone else see her whole storyline leaked ahead of time? i remember reading some leak that pretty much got the whole plot exactly right and going “that’s ridiculous, they won’t do that.” and then when i saw it executed it was one of my favorite parts of the era. (one of my first lessons in not paying too much attention to the leaks, because even when they are true they often are describing something that works way better onscreen.)

It was a complete surprise to me.

Not to me, although I did only watch series 12 a few days ago, so of course it didn’t come as a surprise.

Not gonna happen, but since she kinda of is a classic Doctor I think it would be fun if her era in expanded media was structured closer to classic than new.

We already know how classic works on new terms, but I am curious if the other way around would work.

I think the use of the Classic Theme for Coda is an early indication of her being grouped in with the Classic lot.
