Here’s a really old clip of Bonnie Langford…
It’s funny in retrospect but sadly, this is what stereotyped Bonnie in the eyes of a lot of fans when she was cast as Mel. This was what the general public knew her for and a lot of people couldn’t see past this to the accomplished actress underneath.
And unfortunately, it’s also what the people who hired her for Doctor Who knew her for…
JNT is criticised for her casting but RTD and Chibnall have done similar with casting people like Billie Piper, Catherine Tate and Bradley Walsh. The issue isn’t with the casting but more with how the character/actor is written for.
And to be fair, she was written well in Terror of the Vervoids, and is now…
Actually, she’s also written well in Delta and the Bannermen - no, wait, seriously, no I know I love the story, but she is. It’s only really, I’d say, Ultimate Foe and Time and the Rani where she’s not written well. Even Paradise Towers gives her decent stuff to do (even if she is a bit too obsessed with getting to that pool).
Feels like the forum fell silent now. Where did everyone go?
All that chat about Oxford commas and whether we should call monsters aliens or species has driven everyone away!
But that was so much fun!
The pride parade is on Friday and I don’t have anything to wear. I went to multiple second hand shops last week and didn’t find anything that both fit me and was in a style I liked, so instead I’m attempting to make an entire outfit from scratch in two days (since I’ll be busy tomorrow). Currently working on a skirt. I intend to make it all out of scrap fabric I have at home (I bought like three metres of black cotton at some point and still haven’t gotten through it all) but, as I don’t really collect buttons and zippers, I will have to make those as well. I’m also pretty sure my machine can’t do button holes, so I’ll have to do those by hand. Oh, and apparently I ran out of black thread, so I’ll be using red thread and making it a statement accent. Wish me luck!
good luck! it is possible to do button holes using just a straight stitch, but hopefully you can work something out easily enough!
I know how to hand sew buttonholes, it’s not very difficult, it’s just annoyingly time-consuming (like all hand stitching, unfortunately)
To bed, in my case…
I can’t find the clip again, but I just watched a clip with RTD being interviewed for BAFTA and saying that he would be working with Eve Myles again, very soon
If it’s anything meaningful I got into contact with a fan online who went to the same con as me on Sunday. We both met GDL, but I was far too anxious and frightful to ask what he was working on atm.
Apparently he’s working on an SUV story for Big Finish and also something else which obviously he can’t say anything about (NDAs n all).
But that’s pure speculation and I bet it has nothing to do with anything Whoniverse related (I hope I’m incorrect on that assumption but I don’t wanna be too idealistic).
I would literally jump for joy if she came back to the Whoniverse. One of my favourite characters!
I never quite got the hate that she seemed to generate from certain quarters. I mean, she’s not perfect but that’s WHY she’s a good character. She’s a real person. She doesn’t always get things right, but she tries. There are consequences to her actions, and she learns.
A couple of days off work, and I’m ■■■■■■ after my first day back.
I think she’s alright as a character but one big reason is probably her initial indifference to Rhys.
She’s much better in Big Finish than the main series and the books imo. But she does keep on being possessed by demons and aliens so there’s not as much Gwen stories as there are Gwen-possession stories lmao
I can see the issues with the way she treats Rhys. That said, real people don’t always act as they should.
Possession storylines are fun. A staple of the Whoniverse for a VERY long time.
I’ve not listened to any of the Big Finish Torchwood series. Perhaps I need to rectify that!
