Oooo, this is a great one. The fact that he keeps saying “we” instead of they could be seen as the Doctor’s forgotten past bleeding through.
Yeah. The Doctor’s sentence right before this quote was:
DOCTOR: That’s a hundred thousand years old. The Minyan civilisation was destroyed a hundred thousand years ago, on the other side of the universe.
though they switched to a few lines of dialogue on the ship then came back between that and the rest.
This incarnation of the Doctor was the one who lived through the Founding of Time Lord society. This image is from the meeting with Tecteun and Solpado when he was recruited into Division, & Solpado mentions the policy of non-interference.
Because the policy of non-interference wasn’t created until after the wars with the Great Vampires and Racnoss, and the Minyos incident, that means this incarnation of the Doctor lived through the entire founding of Time Lord society, and as Omega went into the antimatter universe before the policy of non-intervention was established I believe, it means that this incarnation was the one who helped build the Hand of Omega, meaning the 7th Doctor rediscovered and remembered being this incarnation.
If the TARDIS that Hartnell’s Doctor stole was their old Division TARDIS, then the damage like the knackered chameleon & navigation circuit could be explained as the Fugitive Doctor’s relentless pursuit across time & space to escape Division wearing the already old TARDIS out.
It’s been pointed out before that Clara specifically told the Doctor to take that particular TARDIS, making it rather more likely to be the same one…
Yeah, exactly. Also, considering Clara entering the Doctor’s time stream was changing time due to the Great Intelligence entering it, I think originally the First Doctor stole the TARDIS he always stole, then the Great Intelligence mucked that up which is why he goes for another TARDIS, and so Clara had to guide the First Doctor back to the one that he stole.
I’m not sure where I stand with the Fugitive Doctor. I don’t deny that Jo Martin is a good actress. And yet, I’m not warming to her yet. There hasn’t been anything bad about her handful of stories, and yet they haven’t wowed me either. I’ve heard people comment[1] that we should’ve had Jo Martin as the Doctor instead of Jodie Whitaker. And I tend to disagree with that, especially after listening to the Most Wanted boxset. While Thirteen isn’t my favorite Doctor by any means, she’s still decent enough. I get that the Fugitive is a different Doctor and we don’t really know anything about her. We know that she worked for Division, something happened [2] and now she’s on the run. There’s not even a stated placement for her audios in relation to her TV appearance. Will her audio series eventually lead into her TV episode? Are they after her TV episode? We don’t know. As others have mentioned, I’m torn on her referencing and visiting Earth. I get that, as Earth-based listeners (and writers), sometimes such references are inevitable. I also get that there could be some lingering fondness for Earth from the Fugitive that isn’t erased when she’s respawned[3] as the First Doctor (William Hartnell). I’m willing to see what Big Finish does with the character, especially if they do more sets past July’s release. That said, her audio stories and comic aren’t anything I’m going to rush to re-consume.
Her audios are after she left the Division but before she chameleon arched herself as seen in Fugitive of the Judoon
Oooh I love that video, and it definitely adds more to the idea that The Timeless Child was there all along!
The one from Ghost Light is interesting, you’d think an intelligence who’d cataloged all life in the universe would have Time Lord on there, yet Control says the Doctor isn’t in the catalogue of life in the universe, perhaps she could see past the biological rewrite of the Doctor’s body, and his original native biology before any alterations, that it’s not of this universe.
I love the mystery of what planet and species the Doctor comes from, it doesn’t make them special or important because if you have access to space travel, which the Gallifreyans did, then adopting a child from another species isn’t something that’s extraordinary, especially if you have the same outward appearance to the species you’re adopted into as the Doctor did.
Fast Times - 7/10 (Spoilers)
Going into this, I was a little disappointed that they’d chosen to focus on Fugitive as, well, a fugitive, rather than giving us more of her time in Division…
Those disappointments were easily put to bed however when I listened to this, especially with the interviews afterwards. It makes sense for them to focus on Fugitive as a fugitive, as it’s the part of her life that we’ve actually already seen her in, plus would be a weird title for a set if it were called ‘The Fugitive Doctor Adventures’ and she wasn’t one.
Anyway, onto the actual story.
I love the way the story starts, the glimpse at Division, her partner betraying her, her getting away and then getting caught. Her doing the thing of going up to the biggest guy in prison and humiliating him is fun to see, and I absolutely love just how reluctant she is through all of this. You do get the sense that she’s not quite The Doctor™ yet, but she’s absolutely getting there.
I’m also surprised by how much I enjoyed the Daleks here. I’d somehow managed to forget they were in this, or assumed it was a later story, so their appearance did surprise me. I love Fugitive’s interactions with them as well, them knowing her but her not knowing them yet, her trying to get more information. I love that they chose to use The Chase Daleks over the Time War Daleks, and the way they’re eventually defeated by blowing them up with Oppenheimer’s bomb is fun, and shows us that Fugitive still has a decent knowledge of Earth, even in this incarnation, wherever it is.
Also I really like her interactions with Fade here. The Doctor is often characterised like a teacher, and I think the way she’s characterised here feels almost like a ‘strict headteacher’, the core of it is still there, but she’s not quite the person she becomes yet.
I just read the FCBD comic with the Fugitive Doctor and thought that it was kind of cute. I will read the mini-series sometime in the future.
The Legend of Baba Yaga - 8/10 (Spoilers)
On the one hand, I’m somewhat disappointed that we’re doing stories that are earthbound with Fugitive, what with the previous story giving us glimpses of earth, and this one being set on it. On the other, this story is really creative and I can’t help but enjoy it.
Fugitive inadvertently wrapping herself up in the actual events of a folk story when she’s on earth to just find a creature of myth is a really fun idea, and the way it plays out is superb, and again, the creativity on display with Baba Yaga is just splendid.
Jacqueline King does a fantastic job bringing the witch to life with her performance. It’s a character that really demands a certain level of almost golden age disney level camp villain in the performance and she knocks it out of the park.
The actual story on display here too is great, Fugitive coming to find someone else who’s seemed to battle Division, someone who might be able to help her, and Baba Yaga being absolutely nothing like what she’d expected. The witch and her powers having been created though a psychic field, the hut being a crashed TARDIS. The reveal of it being a psychic field being through saving two people from burning to death. It’s a strange but fun romp.
And again, the imagery on display here. The hut, Baba Yaga, the horsemen, etc. The vibes of this story are immaculate.
The Dimension of Lost Things - 7/10 (Spoilers)
The Dimension of Lost Things is a story I want to like more than I do.
Not to say that I didn’t enjoy it, I had a blast, but I felt it was almost holding itself back from how crazy the concept could’ve been, and while I can understand having a human character in there to ground it, and did really enjoy the ending to his story, it did feel like he didn’t really need to have been included, and was more there for to be exposited to and to give the story a connection back to earth.
Like I said though, I did still have a blast. The idea of a dimension where everything that’s been lost ends up is great, and reminded me a bit of Loki season 1 in the best possible way, and everything with the two doctors was brilliant.
Jo Martin is incredible at playing The Doctor, and I love that she gets to have a fun, timey-wimey time here, playing the present day Fugitive, and the past Fugitive pretending to be the future Fugitive. I also really like the interactions between her and Cosmogon here, though their interactions here feel almost more like setup for more future stories with the two rather than being more fully fleshed out character interactions. That said, it’s setup for stories we’re going to be getting soon, and sometimes you do need to set things up before paying them off, so that’s definitely not a complaint!
While again, I do wish they went even more wild with the premise, it definitely does work here, the bit at the end where they timeslip to like 2 minutes prior especially is something I thought was really fun.
Generally, a fun story, if not a standout one.
I really hope we get Karvanista in the Fugitive series someday, would be great
Oh that’d be amazing, perhaps the first Set in the next Year could be that? (Probably wishful Thinking but oh well, one could dream!)
I’m now planning on doing all of the Fugitive Doctor’s appearances again.
(I have a 100% completion of her but I want to do a repeat)
Hope you enjoy!!
I wish the Fugitive Doctor and TARDIS Character Options set was easier to find.
