My thoughts exactly.
Haven’t read them yet but I’m pretty sure that’s a major plot point in several VNAs and EDAs. The wilderness years rly ran with a lot of cool concepts that I’m excited to experience once I eventually get around to them
For me it’s when people say their opinion is objective fact without considering the other side like what’s going on right now with the “doctor who is woke” crowd. I also have a problem with romance between doctor and companion. River Song is an exception. I used to like Rose but after some time I didn’t like her as much because of 10/Rose.
Or when they bring up that they don’t like something a lot. It can discourage people from being honest with what they like or dislike. Can come across as elitist, or that they are trying to force their opinion on others.
Yeah. A lot of the romance feels like an idealised, high school version of what a love story is. River has an actual character/reason.
Rose was cool the first time around but, over the years, the more I watched those first couple of series, I liked her less and less. The romance angle of series 2, and almost fetishisation by fans, has really turned me off to it. It’s a series I dread watching now.
I see this all over the comments in YouTube videos and polls. It’s a little bit irritating seeing that.
Absolutely! There is a pervasive attitude that loud voices equals fact, when all it really equates to is loud voices (far from ‘objective’, closer to ‘objectionable’).
It’s also such a dangerous and unpleasant precedent for people to be so dismissive (and often outright rude) about what other people like. Critique is fine (but it’s typically effectively absent in any meaningful sense from such divisive opinion pieces anyway).
I agree, most wholeheartedly. Much of these rants (which is what they generally are) are completely misplaced anyway, more an ideological attack with weakly formulated political motivation. Yet, even when attacking a story that may be objectively weaker, it is not constructive to be so vehemently unpleasant and aggressive (as is so often the case). There are manifold legitimate reasons why we all enjoy things that are objectively lower in quality (they may have given us comfort at difficult times in our lives, they may contain a particular element that resonates or has genuine significance, they may include a stellar performance or dare to do something different - even if not wholly successful). Such attempts to attack can be harmful to those who do enjoy and also pander to an acceptance of a uniform set of criteria, qualities or values (typically those important to those strident ‘loud voices’ of hate rather than the values of tolerance, respect and the like which DW has always espoused to a greater or lesser degree) that ‘typical’ Who should reflect. This is dangerous in the extreme and ultimately would lead to the death of the show as well as causing harm and upset to others.
Having listened to a lot of 8 in Big Finish, if i see one more knock off 1984 story im gonna cry. NHOF and Time Works were so aggressively mid
I hate that woke word so much. It makes no sense, as surely if you are waking up to something, you’re waking up to some great injustice, not wanting things to stay the same?
If anything, being 'woke" should be seen as a positive thing, as it means you accept everyone regardless of their differences.
The word woke did originally mean that. It’s from AAE and the word meaning has shifted a lot in the recent years. Such a shame that so many people use it as a negative word now.
Language Jones on YouTube explained all this rather well. You should check out thier recent vedios!
More about the fandom than the show itself, but the people who constantly say things like “Doctor Who is DEAD” or make dozens of videos talking about how the ratings are bad and the show is going to end any day now. Like we get it, you think the show is bad now, you’ve been saying it’s going to be canceled since Jodie Whittaker was cast and the show is still going strong! Why are these people still watching it if they hate it so much? Surely there’s got to be a better use of their time.
Not even just since Jodie Whitaker - the doomsayers have been out since Billie Piper was announced as the new companion - a pop star!
And of course, before that in JNT’s era.
They’ve never been right and it makes them cross that other fans continue to enjoy the show. They’ll never admit it, but it’s jealousy. It’s that whole ‘I can’t have it so neither can you’ mentality.
With the modern YouTubers, it’s also the click bait model of the more extreme the title, the more clicks, the more money they make.
Shame the meaning changed. The original definition made more sense then.
The original meaning was definitely pretty clear.
In 1940, in West Virginia, the Negro United Mine Workers went on strike for equitable pay when a Black union leader intoned “we were asleep. But we will stay woke from now on.”
That was the original meaning though, wasn’t it? The term was aggressively co-opted by those of a certain leaning (the wilfully unawoke) as an insult.
Personally, I’m in favour of Kathy Burke’s quote:
"I love being woke. It’s so much nicer than being an ignorant f***** t***" *
I agree with her. I’d rather be woke than full of hate.
Me too. Definitely happy with where I stand in that regard. And our wonderful show, for that matter!
Seeing the words by Philip Martin on a script.
Thanks a bunch, ‘Mission to Magnus’!
Referring to series 1-13 as season 1-13. Saw a Radio Times article refer to season 2/series 15/season 41 as season 15 and it annoys me whenever they do this. It’s series, not season when using the NuWho format!
