I found it from a bing search, so I have no ownership.
I’m sorry, this isn’t allowed to happen
As I am currently only halfway through the thread, I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it already: IDW’s Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who Crossover was quite good. The Cybermen meet the Borg (Eleventh and Fourth Doctor, captains Picard and Kirk).
I enjoyed the story, but wasn’t thrilled with the art.
You use Bing. May I ask why?
I find it works better for getting relevant results. It filters spam like I remember Google doing years ago. I only use Google search if I want to deep dive the internet with IF OR NOT statements.
But I honestly barely search for things from the whole internet.
I use startpage
-
They continue be written as an army of murder robots and their original aspect gets forgotten, like what is happening with the Daleks.
-
They return to their roots and become scary again (which i hope happens, because they are my absolute favourite monsters)
Be fair. That was happening from The Moonbase onwards. The Invasion is 100% just the Cybermen as ‘murder robots’.
Sweet… I will have to check that out💫
I just watched it yesterday and it is very pertinent to this conversation!
Yet The Invasion managed to keep them as an imposing threat.
I’d also recommend the ArcHive Tapes. They can be a little dry in places, but they give an in-universe chronology/biography of Cybermen, and use clips from the show to demonstrate some sections. Written by the Cyber-leader performer David Banks.
Using the link to Amazon UK, you can pick up a copy for a little over £18.
They’re also available for free with Spotify Premium.
I found the story focussed more on Vaughn and the unintelligible Cyberplanner. However imposing they may have been they are still little more than robots. The true horror of the Cybermen isn’t really something the TV series brought focus to until Attack of the Cybermen and then the modern series actually ran with it more with a lot more stories featuring the conversion aspect which is totally absent from most classic series Cybermen stories.
And I’ll say it till I’m blue in the face: if you want a good Cyberman story, focus on the fact there’s a person under that face place. When BF announced Trials of a Time Lord, I was pleased until I saw that bottom left corner of the cover and I became EXCITED. Cybermen done well are my favorite monsters in the series because there’s so many ways to take such a simple concept.
This is why I will forever say Cyberwoman is the best Cyberman episode.
Agreed, stories that treat Cybermen as basically just invading androids have got it all wrong.
They should be more like the Borg (which I believe were inspired by Cybermen) - body horror and existential threat, removing individuality.
Sins of the Flesh got it so right, and is a brilliant Cyberman story.
Because I know how much you love Cyberwoman, I’m most excited to rewatch that soon! I’m thinking I’ll start my Torchwood rewatch this weekend
You’ll have to update me and tell me if you enjoy it!
