At this point I think a S5 thread wouldn’t go amiss :sob::sob::sob:

I think it’s good but overrated/hyped.

I’d tend to go “Remembrance of the Daleks” and “Spearhead From Space”, personally…

Probably the best modern series opener. As for the classic series, it’s tough to compare, since they hardly ever really went for a “series opener,” more just “this one is first.” Spearhead, Three Doctors, and Remembrance are probably the seasons’ first serials that could possibly rival Eleventh. Maybe Zygons, Fang Rock, and Ribos at more of a stretch.

I really enjoy The Eleventh Hour and it’s certainly one of the best post revival season openers. My choice for best would have to go to The Pilot which I think is near flawless though, yes, Eleventh isn’t far behind and I’m also hugely fond of Deep Breath. It’s important to recognise Rose here as well. A beautifully crafted and deftly scripted opener that set the stage for one of the most successful comebacks in television history.

For classic season openers, we shouldn’t overlook An Unearthly Child. I’d also list Day of the Daleks ( a personal fave), Terror of the Zygons (rightly a true classic), Horror of Fang Rock (one of my all time favourites), The Ribos Operation (this has gtown so much for me - an utter delight) and Remembrance of the Daleks (scintillating).

It’s good. I don’t get why it’s often called the best series opener when Deep Breath exists though (and obviously a load of classic openers, like Remembrance).

But yeah, TEH is well-written and I think it does a good job of setting up the tone and style of the new moffat era of the show, with the whole ‘timey-wimey-ness’, as well as introducing the s5 threat of cracks in reality. Young Amy waiting for the Doctor is often analysed as an interpretation of Doctor Who fans in the wilderness years, which is really interesting, as I like it when the show is self-referential.

Something that puts me off this episode though is the scene when 11 is trying lots of different foods. It may be a little bit relatable (as an autistic with sensory issues) but when he spits the food out it really grosses me out and so I always feel kind of nauseous when I think about this episode. I really wish that scene wasn’t in it, because it isn’t that big a deal and my judgement on the episode doesn’t deserve to be impacted by it!

I quite love this episode, and it’s my favourite of NuWho openers, though I will admit I am very biased as 11 is my first and favourite Doctor (Capaldi is a close second don’t shoot me :sob:), but this episode has a lot of what I love, Matt Smith being an absolute weirdo, fish fingers and custard (they’re actually good you have to trust me on this), the Doctor’s “Basically run” scene, and I just adore how they showed off Rory being quite competent and not banishing him to the role of the tin dog. Now saying all this, I don’t think this episode is a 10/10, It’s good, but I don’t think it reaches the heights of other 10/10s, an 8/10 is more fair imo.

While I wouldn’t put Rose above TEH, I do 100% agree with everything you said about it, it essentially had the fate of the entire show’s future on it’s back, and it didn’t fail to deliver, as the first every episode of NuWho, spectacular.

I think people’s opinion on Deep Breath hinges a lot on how much people enjoy S8’s Capaldi’s characterisation, and how much they enjoyed Matt Smith, as S8 Capaldi is quite a harsh switch up compared to S7 Smith. I still think it’s a fantastic episode, and I’m always for more Paternoster Gang .

I enjoy it, it’s good fun.

Doctor Who is usually quite good with season openers.

It’s both my favourite NuWho opener, and my favourite opener all round. Only a few Moffatisms hold it back from being kinda perfect in my eyes.

Why did this introduce the browser history joke to the world :sob:

Moffatisms? Detracting from a story? Can’t relate.

I adore Moffatisms, they’re just so corny I can’t help but love them

If anything, RTD invented “browser history” with Mickey saying to Rose “don’t read my e-mails!”

I like Moffat scripts a lot to be fair, I’m just very exhausted by quips and he loved his quips :sob:

Ah the quips are a huge part of that snappy dialogue of Moffat’s that I love so much.

To each their own! I like some but I think he goes a bit overboard, and sometimes writes stuff to be more clever than it is and it’s a bit grating

It’s great! Not my favorite of that Series but great nonetheless, if we are just talking about the revived Show it might have a Chance to be the best Opener for me, but then again Deep Breath exist… so nah. As for all the Seasons, I think it’s hard to compare, but plenty of classic Seasons started with some brilliant Opening Stories such as Remembrance!

Deep Breath was in my thoughts for modern series rivals to it for season openers, but ultimately thought Eleventh was just that little bit tighter. Impossible Astronaut up there too.

To be perfectly honest, at this point, most of what I remember about the Eleventh Hour is Amy as a little girl, then as a kissogram, and there’s a monster in the walls. I really need to rewatch the Matt Smith era.
