Mostly that Bonnie Langford wanted to leave the show, I think…

I would like to stab this serial and suck all the fluids out. Like a juice box. (Normal thing to say) (Positive)

Watched Wish World and The Reality War tonight. Managed to not hit any spoilers at all ahead of time. Well, except a ton of stuff on YouTube spoiled the very last thing that happened just from the screenshot and headline. But anyway, I’m caught up now, at last.

DW And The Silurians Parts 1-4 on the new Collection set (at the end of part 4, girlfriend goes “there’s three more? Absolutely not, we’ll finish tomorrow” which is so fair, she loves Silurians and Sea Devils in particular but her bedtime’s her bedtime).

I do really like this story, but it only really gets to the juicy part of it during Part 4, The Doctor’s desperate and futile attempt to avert a massacre, of anyone, humans or Silurians. Before that there is some fun detective work and a dinosaur and Liz Shaw has the coolest green duffel and Fulton Mackay is very good but expires too early, but the Brig really does spend about three full episodes sitting or standing in the same room saying that he is waiting for reinforcements haha. There’s no denying those first four parts could collapse down pretty happily into two (excited to watch the omnibus edition of this, I really enjoy those different edits). I know Barry Letts later considered Fulton Mackay for the 4th Doctor, but I also think he’d have made a great Master.

You can immediately feel that Barry and Terry don’t know what to do with a Liz Shaw, she is nominally doing sciencey help here and there, but apart from the one cool thing where she is the one human to see the Silurian and not primally regress, she is not given a ton to do. I do like her cave diving pigtails though, that’s a good look. But it would be nice for her to be doing something active and clever.

It is a shame the drop in visual quality from Spearhead to this one, and compounded by all the restoration and recoloring that had to be painstakingly done because the weirdos at the BBC thought burning their own archive made just the best sense. This restoration is nice though, I’m glad we have this one!

I got yelled at last time I brought it up, but yeah, The Silurians is an amazing story. Really love seeing the Third Doctor as action spy, scientist, and diplomat.

Definitely! I could watch that scene on a loop.

And why are there mattresses on the TARDIS floor…

Watched Shada. I do not get the hype for this one. A truly hauntingly good score and some lovely location filming does not a classic make, and this one was just not it for me. It veered way too much into hard sci-fi for my taste and I struggled to keep up with the plot. Give me Hinchcliffe any day. 4/10, just not my cup of tea.

…and with that, Season 17 is done and I only have one more 4 story left. Logopolis. Blimey.

I might be wrong but I think that it’s “missing” status is part of what makes the hype.

There’s a variation of one on The War Games DVD as well.

I thought it was genuinely one of the better Fourth Doctor serials lol. I loved the Professor guy and how lighthearted the story was.
