Yeah I feel like my partner won’t give me her permission…
LKH isn’t great, but Series 6 is actually pretty good. I think it’s rather underappreciated.
LKH does have some great VFX with the Tesselecta, I’ll give it that
People will tell you it sucks - don’t listen to them!!!
I go into everything with an open mind
LKH is better than its reputation I feel.
It has a rating of 2,92/5
I would say that that is just about right for that story - there’s good bits in it but it is more than a bit messy plot wise.
And Alex Kingston is not at her best here…
Well of course, it is a River Song episode, so how many times did @shauny rate it 5/5?
He strangled his companion??
Yup…
It sounds very bad, but trust me, it makes sense with context.
He’s just regenerated, so his mind is adjusting.
He mistakenly thinks Peri is an alien spy, so attacks her.
He comes to his senses though, his mind was just a bit jumbled up after his regeneration.
WOAH
Oh alright context makes sense , still strange though
The strangling of Peri, while maybe not the best plan for the first impression of the new Doctor, is in the grand scheme of things not that big a deal because of his post-regenerative trauma, he wasn’t in his right mind. I have more issues with how it comes across as 6 being mean to her a lot of the time in S22. I don’t mind conflict between Doctor and companion, but to me in S22 it comes across as mean-spirited bickering and almost abusive rather than banter. I don’t care for how it legitimately seems like they hate each other, seems like no one is having a good time, and I don’t get why Peri doesn’t leave. And that isn’t the fault of Baker and Bryant, more the writing and how Saward edited the scripts. It was a lot better in S23 when the two actors decided they didn’t like the way they were being written, so they changed up the performances a bit to seem more like friendly banter. I know some people see it differently, and like S22, but that’s how it comes across to me.
I don’t interpret it this way at all, but I know this is one of those things we will always disagree on.
I wish Six’s characterization these days still had some of his s22 edge to him.
I like the edge, but not so much directed at Peri specifically, at least the way it was written in S22. It feels like Peri’s written for the most part to essentially just take it without really standing up for herself at all in the TV series, not in any way really on an even footing with 6. I like things like the quip in the Varos acid bath scene, and the colder persona generally though.
It might be a bit messy but definitely people hate it more than it deserves. I’ve always had a soft spot for it. I think it’s one of those ones which divides opinion because it’s very Moffat at his Moffat-iest, which I personally like
From my perspective, she stood up for herself plenty of times with the insults she hurled at him. What would you have rather she done? They can’t exactly have her fighting the guy.
Also, there are various lines and scenes throughout s22 that affirm that they did appreciate each other’s company despite their disagreements; and when Six did suggest taking her home, she didn’t want that (she did, though, wish for him to take them somewhere relaxing).
If he was constantly doing DV every episode, that would be one thing, but their disagreements were petty, like schoolchildren. To me, Peri never came across like a pushover, but rather like someone who had her own way of approaching situations like this because she did like spending time with him (and being in the TARDIS). If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have put up with it as long as she did (see: The Quin Dilemma). If she can jump off her step-dad’s boat to catch an international flight with some strange men, she could surely leave the TARDIS if she wanted.
Assuming I’m not too tired after work, I’ll watch Hand of Fear 3 and perhaps even 4 an aw tonight…
Well I’m glad you see it differently to me, and have something to enjoy in there. Maybe next rewatch I’ll see it a different way.
