  • Big present the kid crawls in, alien world. Trees.
  • Wood people?
  • “The Mothership”
  • The father doesn’t die

The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe is a hugely underrated and misunderstood story. It’s Doctor Who as children’s classic fiction (which is why some fans have an allergic reaction to it - it reminds them that Doctor Who is made for children…)

That’s actually. I was about to say the only new who episode i never watched- that’s not true, I dropped out around 13 and still need to catch up with that era- but it’s the only episode that existed in my peak teenage new-who phase that I didn’t watch back then: the, shall we say Indie streaming service I used back then- with native-language subtitles- didn’t have it. And since it’s a christmas special, I never even knew I was missing it until… well. Until I was logging everything into TARDIS guide last year.

I find the plot once they get into the titular wardrobe to be just kind of forgettable. However, the characters for me are the main star of the episode, I’m not ashamed to admit the episode and the characters make me sob ugly tears every time I watch it :sob:. It’s a very feel good Christmas episode.

Everyone who dislikes Doctor, Widow and Wardrobe also hates Narnia. That’s a fact! /j

I don’t care much for Narnia to be honest.

Had a really difficult time watching Arachnids in the UK. Probably in my top 5 least enjoyable episodes I’ve seen. Not because it was bad, just my arachnophobia being worse than Ryan’s. Everybody on reddit and YouTube was hugely exaggerating that whole mercy killing spiders thing. It’s like one minute at the end. The rest is a wonderfully bleak (but still very fun) slowly unraveling story about a lack of care and a want to win your race for power resulting in horrifying consequences. Go off honestly Chris. Get them with your allegorical spiders. A fun one to have a think about. Except, not really, because just thinking about it again makes my skin crawl, which was probably the point, but still, it’s called a phobia for a reason, the irrational fear and such. Never said I have to make sense! Hated this one. Could barely stand to even watch it! Mostly just read the subtitles. 3 out of 5.

I feel you on the arachnophobia, I had to put it on my second monitor and turn my head whenever the spiders were on screen. Damm Chibnall why weren’t you thinking about us when you greenlit the episode /j

Yeah, that’s about my memory of it, minus Amy Pond…

The spiders looked so good in Arachnids in the UK. I liked the Yaz and her family stuff too. It does bother me a little that the scientists were basically let completely off the hook by the story. Yes, Robertson’s company was the waste disposal company who cut corners, but I work in a lab, if we had a similar situation, we’d be in just as much trouble for not making doubly sure that everything was done properly down the line. And I do think it’s a misstep to have the Doctor advocating for letting them starve to death rather than end their suffering quickly, and it ends up making the bad guy make the “correct” call in the end (even if his motivations were clearly not out of mercy, as the Doctor pointed out). It’s not a terrible episode, but I’d rather watch The Green Death for something covering similar themes.

I really like this episode, although I can definitely see how horrible it would be for people with arachnophobia!

Yay got a fever so I’m just lying on the sofa watching Doctor Who… Silver linings right?

I’m 2 and a half minute into Asylum of the Daleks.
Karen Gillan looks utterly ridiculous during that photoshoot, her makeup looks like it was made by a 5 year old…
Dear god the plot with the divorce is even more ridiculous, I really think Amy and Rory’s last scene should have been the one in The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe.
When does Jenna Coleman come on screen for the parts I like ?

Being sick makes me grumpy…

Yeah that was a bad decision from Moffat.

On to “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship”.

Such a nice romp with a spaceship, dinosaurs, Detective Lestrade, Nefertiti, robots and Papa Weasley. That’s all I need for a bit of Comfort Who.
What’s not to like?

Best of series 7A hands down for me.
