Finishing Series 2 for the TV Club with the biggest melodramatic smugfest there is - Army of Ghosts and Doomsday!

And then I will rewatch Day of the Doctor before reading the Target novelisation.

Oooh, where to start… Mostly he is annoying but also: bad acting, bad scripts, and jokes that were boring.

I wish she was a bigger part of it, she is a great character, but she should not be a part of Unit.

I have not seen that.

For me, I think Lennie Rush is great but I really didn’t like Morris in the finale.

And specifically in the finale.

Lennie Rush was even great as Morris and I think Morris could be an excellent character but it was his presence in that story which really annoyed me. A different episode in a different capacity (ie just as capable and clever… But just not part of UNIT) and I’d have been totally on board but him in the finale doing what he was doing?

It did not work for me at all.

In fact, UNIT employing kids in such dangerous positions didn’t sit well with me at all. I’ve seen several complaints about it, many incredibly dramatic so I’m wary when I mention it because it does come from a level headed place, honestly. It just paints UNIT as outrageously irresponsible.

I’d have loved Morris to have been a 21st century Earthbound genius who helps the Doctor, sure. On the UNIT payroll? No. Not only does it unnecessarily swell the ranks of characters there to the point of unwieldy, it just doesn’t reflect well on UNIT.

So my issue isn’t really with Lennie as an actor or Morris as a character, but my own personal opinion is that he’s definitely not been used correctly. Or even competently.

I think it’s far more complex than that, if I’m honest. I don’t think it’s a slight on her at all. There is literally nothing in the script/scene/performance to suggest Carla is being pushed aside by Ruby’s birth mother now being on the scene.

This really feels like people being offended on behalf of others. I know three sets of adoptive parents and I’m not sure if any of them would be as offended by this as people seem to be. I also know that Christel Dee was publically supportive of Ruby’s storyline so I do wonder what she thinks.

I’m really having mixed thoughts about Empire of Death now.

It’s really hard to tell whether I like it or not…

The Two Doctors is a deeply strange story. It had very funny moments, yes, but it felt like a parody of itself. It’s a multi-doctor story where they only meet in the last episode and one of them spends half of it as a weird cannibal alien. Imagine they did that today with Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi lmao. It was somehow too long whilst saying too little. It did make me want to go to Seville though, so that’s something.

Having now finished Season 22… yeah I think this is my least favourite classic who season along with 19. Mark of the Rani was my favourite alongside Revelation, but the rest ranges from just eh to absolute slop imo.

I think Varos would be my favourite but Rani and Revelation are both good too. The Two Doctors is too long and Attack and Timelash are just odd in how convoluted and inconsistent they are - both have some amazing elements like the Borad’s make up and the return of Lytton.

But we get to see Two and Jamie again and that makes it great!

Decided that screw it, I’m gonna start and make as much my way through trial as I can before work later. Two episodes into Mindwarp. Just… why.

Mysterious Planet was good enough, and I actually quite like how the Doctor and Peri didn’t seem to hate each other anymore… only for them to seemingly do it again in Mindwarp. This story is actively irritating me. Sil sucks. It’s overly cruel to Peri for no reason. 6 is acting like an ass and Brian Blessed is the only thing holding it up.

Finished it. Yeah, I think I’ve found my least favourite classic who episode. What were they thinking. Who let Phillip Martin cook. Just why.

Timelash also does the whole “The Doctor’s been here on a previous off-screen adventure” trope that I liked in “The Face of Evil”. We get Paul Darrow in it. The idea of the Doctor traveling with HG Wells in the TARDIS and inspiring him to write “The Time Machine” is a good one, and we actually get a great TARDIS scene with the two of them.

And we get Colin Baker making a variety of silly iconic faces!

So, are you going to do it sensibly, like from the beginning or follow a certain Doctor, or jump between random serials like me, as if we don’t have control over where we land? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My recommendation is always to do it in broadcast order the first time around because then you’ll be able to see how the show and characters evolve from season to season.

Well, there’s a reason my topic for watching classic is called Classic from the Beginning!

Finished off “Snakedance” last night (to try and wash the stench of “The Flash” off of my soul).

I love that story. The world-building is phenomenal. The acting is superb.
It builds perfectly on “Kinda”.
Martin Clunes as Lon is unbelievably good :+1:
The ending is rushed a bit too much perhaps, but it is still a good story.

I know the Mara was mentioned as a part of the Pantheon but by Coldstream’s Gonks I hope they don’t give the Mara the “Sutekh treatment”

In the s2 finale they’re gonna reveal that it has been wrapped around the Doctor’s sonic since Snakedance this entire time

Tsk tsk tsk. The Doctor didn’t have a sonic at that time :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Please don’t do it RTD

Don’t mess with the Mara! (At the very least bring Tegan back if you are going to include it)

And another one bites the dust. I definitely prefer Trial over s22! While, as I’ve said, Mindwarp is complete slop, I found both Vervoids and Ultimate Foe to be really really enjoyable (the latter is my favourite 6 episode I think!)

Does make you think of all the could-have-beens for a final 6 TV season with Mel, though. A proper onscreen regeneration would’ve been really nice to have, even if I’m sure Spiral Scratch and The Last Adventure fill that niche nicely.
