Finished The Star Beast, follows the episode fairly close, a handful little bits and bobs (the space wikipedia page late in the book was fun). That said, there’s no particular reason why you’d want to read this on top of or instead of watching the TV story. It was a fine read, but nothing overly outstanding. Next up, Wild Blue Yonder.
I’m currently reading the first Dalek Annual from 1964 it’s interesting but not anything special just yet
Bonkers… but also truly GREAT! I love that book so much!
Now halfway through Lungbarrow, I’ve just gotten through my favorite chapter so far! Romana, Leela, and Ace get to at last all meet and have a conversation together, and they’re lovely together; Platt’s got their characterizations excellently. I wasn’t a big fan of Ace going by Dorothée in Happy Endings, but she also just wasn’t characterized well in that book imo, and while I was unsure at first in this one, I definitely now think she’s been much better handled in Lungbarrow. Some of the stuff in the actual House so far has gone on a bit long, and I don’t feel all the characters there have been as distinct as they should be, but events seem to be proceeding in an interesting direction there as well now.
And I’ve finished Lungbarrow! Which I very much enjoyed! That’s a whole 60-book series wrapped, I feel very accomplished!
(Yes, I know about The Dying Days, but I feel like it’s pretty distinct from the main series of New Adventures which very much feels like it’s been wrapped up and hit its finale with Lungbarrow.)
I’m so excited to continue on into the EDAs, PDAs, and Benny VNAs, with just a few more books to get through first!
Didn’t even make it 50 pages into Twilight of the Gods during a slow day at work before I decided I wasn’t wasting my time on that. Victoria I am so sorry. Onto The Dark Path.
Oh dear I loved Twilight of the Gods
In a fun coincidence though, we’re both starting The Dark Path today!
Finished The Eight Doctors two days ago and now on Vampire Science. Gosh I’m loving it so much. Never thought I could enjoy EDA this much!
Moving now from The Vampire of Paris to The Game of Death, as I march through The Darksmith Legacy.
Are they any good?
OK, this is getting ridiculous. I know for a fact that EDA writers didn’t always agree when it comes to the eye colour of the 8th Doctor, but in the same book?
We have in #02 Vampire Science,
He was tall and slender, with long chestnut hair and green, green eyes.
from Chapter 1 Something Wonderful, Something Horrible
Looks like he’s in his thirties. Brown hair and green eyes. English accent.
from Chapter 3 Now You See Me
But suddenly
He had bright, clear blue-grey eyes, which James could see somehow even in the darkness.
from Chapter 8 Bloodfasting
Now I’m looking forward to see 8th’s eye colour change again and keep track every single instance they mention it.
P.S. What I’ve got so far are
#00 The Novel of the Film
He had rather sad looking eyes, yet they were bright blue and quite attractive.
from Chapter 3 One for Sorrow, Two for Joy
This new face possessed piercing pale blue eyes and something of a frown.
from Chapter 4 Three for a Girl
#01 The Eight Doctors
He wore old-fashioned vaguely Edwardian clothes and he had brown curly hair and extraordinarily bright blue eyes.
from Chapter 1 Totters Lane
His eyes are definitely blue in the movie, but blue eyes do often look green in certain lighting, and it’s definitely possible he has that kind of colour-changing eyes. Hell, they look purple in half of the promo shots!
At some point in the EDAS (I think it’s Vampire Science, could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure it’s an Orman/Blum book) it’s lampshaded that nobody can agree on what colour eyes the Doctor has!
In-universe, you can easily read the contradictions as Eight having colour-changing eyes. Personally, I enjoy the headcanon that different people see his eyes as different colours!
Colour-changing eyes vs Different people see 8th’s eyes differently…
Oh, it’s a hard one to decide…
I’ve started the mad task of reading all 75 New Series Adventures books, starting with The Clockwise Man.
In the non-Doctor Who world I’m reading Brighton Rock, Dracula and a book on OCD!
They’re aimed at younger readers, so they’re not exactly challenging. They’re fine for a light, straightforward read, but if you’re looking for complexity or depth or character development, seek elsewhere.
We are doing the same in the Book Club share your journey there if you want to
Im kinda with you on that. I’ll finish this one and see how I feel. Is there a series you’d recommend I deep dive? Preferably one I can listen to as audiobooks on Spotify, as everything else I read in physical book form and I don’t want a deluge of books!
I will share as I write reviews for the site
This is actually an intentional thing from what I know, I’ve read that in the New Adventures they made a point of showing the Doctor’s eyes as different colors to be extra mysterious and alien or something lol
(Edit: I didn’t really ever notice it while I was reading the New Adventures, but there you go I guess lol)
