Pausing my (utterly delightful!) Doctor Who and the Pirates listen to say that the cliffhanger to part 2 is a contender for my favourite cliffhanger in all of Doccy Who, along with “The TARDIS got stolen… by an ice cream van!?” from Memory Lane
The Inheritance - wow! Utterly superb. Saffiya Inghar made an immediate impact, Dudman is indistinguishable from Smith and it was a clever plot with some interesting threads dangled.
I’m going to space these out though to savour them.
Totally agree on that cliffhanger. If it were on TV, I can imagine a classic 80s style crash zoom into Colin’s face just as the closing credits kick in.
Finished Doctor Who and the Pirates earlier! Easy 5 stars, and the fact it and Jubilee came out relatively close to each other when both are just perfect in their own ways is wild to me.
I’m a huge fan of Absolution, always glad to hear someone else enjoyed it too!
Oh, I can tell it’s headed somewhere kinda dark…but that’s cool too!
Started the new Susan’s War box set. Having a hard time focusing. Not because of the plot or anything
Oh, I love that story so very much! Yes, I know what you mean. There are certainly some fun and goofy moments, but… wow! It goes somewhere very deep and very very dark.
Took my breath away on my first listen. And it stays with you. Wonderful stuff.
Oh yes, it’s probably my favourite Main Range release, but of the ones I’ve heard so far. And simply a stellar audio overall. And it was just as effective when I listened to it for the audio club as when I first listened to it a few years ago.
First part of The Demon Song on the way to work. Still not big on Noonan’s Hartnell voice or intonation, but as I said with Deathworld he NAILS the energy, softheartedness, and vibes. Story wise the mystery is really intriguing and fun, and I love the idea of 1 in a contemporary setting. Love how they baked in a lot of the misspeaks into the script - adds authenticity to the era! Overall very strong first part.
THE LAST ADVENTURE: The End of the Line
This is a boxed set I’ve wanted to listen to for a long while but have only just got around to. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but the first story was a delight. I love the setting, a railway carriage stranded in thick fog. Atmospheric and claustrophobic. In some ways reminiscent of ‘Midnight’ with a select group of people trapped together in a strange and alien environment. The characters were well drawn and the story was entertaining. After this one, I’m definitely looking forward to the rest. ‘The Red House’ by Alan Barnes next. Charley Pollard. Hooray!
Okay, well, The Transit of Venus. Quite enjoyed this one. The mystery around Banks was fun, though the way Susan and Barbara were lost and retrieved, couldn’t completely buy it, but whatevs, still quite enjoyed the narrative.
Then there was The Prisoner’s Dilemma, big thumbs down on that one. Supposedly an Ace story, much of it is Zara’s story. Zara, a character I neither know, nor care about. Now, I do vaguely remember the Key 2 Time sequence and the twin sisters, but the whole point of sticking this disc into the Companion Chronicles, I believe, is to suck people from one range into another, a crossover episode if you will. And that doesn’t predispose me to giving it a fair shake.
It’s a little hard to follow the plot as it jumps around and the story really doesn’t give me enough reason to care what’s happening. And the title? Very little to do with the story. There is a fun little bit at the end, but mostly just one I’m happy to move past.
Listened to The Two Masters recently, capping off the Master trilogy. I cannot overstate how good all these stories are, definitely give them a listen if you haven’t already!
Never realised this was a two parter! Really strong stuff.
Loving Incherton Incident so far! Two parts in and Noonan’s performance is outstanding, Dodo actually has stuff to do (And Cornelius is great as her!), part 2 has a great cliffhanger, and I really love how Virginia doesn’t feel like a character from this era at all. Loving how this set throws 1 and Dodo into totally new territory!
I’ll finish this tomorrow while I sight see in London before the meet up.
I finished the Rapture yesterday.
It was fun and enjoyable, but honestly not really for me.
It’s Excelis Day
On with Excelis Decays
(Are we doing a super duper special Audio Club on the Benny Excelis one as well?)
Only acceptable answer is yes by the way
Yes, we will do Plague Herds as Audio Club Extra seems to have been a success.
Listened to Toby Hadoke’s Too Much Information on Sentence of Death. Always fascinating especially the bit about some of the Billy fluffs.
Loved the Incherton Incident! Noonan gave me chills, and this is the story (especially in part 4) where he felt the most Hartnell-esque to me. The supporting cast were all great and the way the plot unravelled was amazing!
Now relistening to Storm Warning for first time in forever to get me in the 8 and Charley mood.
I thought Storm Warning was just okay when I listened to it a handful of years back but coming back to it a week or so ago I found I really liked it? Especially enjoyed the scene where the Doctor is playing along with the idea that he’s a German spy, because when he’s doing the whole “just a pidgeon” bit I can so easily imagine how Paul McGann might play it, looking around as though for approval and awkwardly grinning away.
McGann is really giving it his all I feel like, so much life and energy in his performance, seemingly not needing any time at all to warm back into the role.
