Those parts were the best parts of the book. The rest follows the TV story. I am glad that I listened to it.
I have a two hour long train ride ahead of me, so I’m listening to the Marian Conspiracy.
I’ve been skipping around the Main Range for ages but trying to do it ‘As @shauny Directs’ now.
Half way through the first series of Jago and Litefoot Series 1 (including Mahogany Murders). Both leads are great and I’m enjoying the setting for similar reasons to why I like the paternoster gang sets.
So far though I think the stories rely on having a wrap up in the last 5 mins where Litefoot explains what happened. Reminds me of the worse episodes of BBCs Sherlock.
Just starting Deadly Strangers with Puccini and the Doctor.
Sting of the Sasquatch was nothing special but a nice way to pass time.
Doctor Who: The Marian Conspiracy
First time I’ve listened to this story in quite a while and, my, it still delights me. Just a big warm cosy hug of a story. Of course, Evelyn Smythe is a delight from start to finish. Such a refreshing change as a companion. She’s a wonderful match for ol’ Sixie and Colin clearly adored acting alongside her.
The story itself is gentle and nicely explores the complexities of historical figures. Yes, it only really scratches the surface but it ably addresses the fact that there’s frequently more to villified figures than is commonly assumed. Mary is presented as a person, a flawed person to be sure, but crucially NOT a caricature.
It’s just a cosy, lovely, relatively low stakes story.
Doing a bit more of Doom Coalition today.
From DC2 I’ve heard “Beachhead” which was a good enough story but nothing really spectacular - though I do enjoy the Voord
Currently just finished the second story “Scenes From Her Life”. I enjoy the story, but my word do the performances of Vincent Franklin and Jacqueline King annoy me, I get why they sound kind of dim, drawling and drunk, but it grates on me just enough to take away some of the enjoyment of the story.
Helen asking Liv how long it usually means that they should wait when the Doctor says they under no circumstances should follow him out of the TARDIS
I’m probably not the only one from here but as a way to commemorate Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter I’m listening to The Mahogany Murderers and probably going to start their spin-off as well!
Finished series 1 of Redacted!
Finished Zone 10. Good stuff but not groundbreaking. A Thousand Tiny Wings next for my marathon.
Just finished the first volume of the Tenth Doctor Adventures. Out of the three, Death and the Queen was probably my favorite. It had the strongest characters (Ten and Donna’s friendship is shown of really well) and my favorite plot, definitely feels like one of the stories that could have been a TV episode.
On Ghost Beach was alright.
It could have been much better in my opinion.
I’m also not sure where I stand on Susan Twist’s 15 impression. Does Ncuti really sound that much like Capaldi?
Well, no. His accent is a bit Scottish with a hint of his Rwandan ancestry. To my non-native ear, he sounds much less Scottish than McCoy, Tennant and Capaldi.
Susan Twist doesn’t think so!
It honestly sounds like listening to a Twelfth Doctor audiobook!
I guess she didn’t receive enough direction then or wasn’t quite sure how to capture the accent.
I have started listening to the Target version of the Space Museum. So far, it feels mostly like a faithful retelling of the TV episode.
Today…The Uncertainty Principle. Unusually, I found myself more interested in the framing story than the “main” story. Many of the Companion Chronicles have some framing device to let the actor introduce the actual story and narrate it, but this Zoe sequence actually has an ongoing narrative about her memory loss and the Company’s attempts to retrieve it, and I’ve gotten sucked into that.
Starting Bang-Bang-a-Boom! for Audio Club. More thoughts to follow there.
Finished House on the Edge of Chaos which I really liked.
Now listening to ‘Energy of the Daleks’ which is set in the far flung future of 2025
