The Eleven is a really interesting idea, I just wish they’d done more with it than ‘hehe multiple personalities made this guy crrrrraaaazy!’ It just leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth that there is rarely any nuance in his character than this

He actually mocked Helen for thinking it’s the Regenerative Dissonance that made him crazy. I can’t remember which episode though

But yeah… the similarity with DID could be dealt with better

Done with my repeat of “The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50”.

It was just as good as I remembered it being. David Tennant and Michelle Gomez is a fun pairing - but I must say that I would have loved for Stephen Noonan to have an even larger role in this, his first Doctor is fantastic, he really captures the mannerisms and charm of Hartnell’s performance in a way I don’t really feel like David Bradley has ever done (David Bradley as William Hartnell in “An Adventure in Space and Time” is absolutely amazing though).

On to “Time Lord Immemorial” :slightly_smiling_face:

Half way through The Living Darkness and it’s fine. But with the last boxset being reunited with older Vicki this just feels like the range repeating itself, certainly far too soon.

With older Jamie and Zoe reuniting with the Doctor in the Second Doctor range as well, this just isn’t working for me.

I get it, the actors are older and can’t sound like their younger selves any more. But that doesn’t mean Steven even need appear here. There’s a Chronicles range, or have him meet a later Doctor. Same with Jamie and Zoe (and there it kind of goes against the relatively blank canvas Season 6B offers). This doesn’t feel like the way I want these ranges to go unfortunately and it is impeding on my enjoyment of the stories.

Will finish The Living Darkness but sincerely hope for something different in the next boxset.

I am more than happy to suspend my disbelief and pretend they’re all as young as they were. I get what they’re trying to do with the older companions but I agree, it’s not really necessary

Same. Even if I couldn’t, and this was the only way to use those actors, it needn’t be as predictable and repetitive as this.

The Tenth Doctor reunited with Sarah, the Thirteenth with Ace and Tegan. It does not need to be with the Doctors they travelled with. The way they’re currently doing it is not good storytelling in my opinion, at all.

Two consecutive boxsets we have Jamie and Zoe rejoin in the 2DAs, two consecutive boxsets we have Vicki and Steven come back in the 1DAs. This is cookie cutter and takes me out of the fiction, unfortunately.

I’ve still got some December releases to catch up on after this (Deadly Strangers and Unknown Soldiers) and, with also not enjoying Joy to the World, I really hope they’re good…

I have Zygon Century downloaded and ready to go! As soon as I finish Benny. It’s one of my anticipated releases of 2025, so it better be good!

Got through the BBC Audio Original The Flight of the Sun God today while walking to uni. For a Nev Fountain script, it was quite disappointing– not bad, just frustratingly bland.

Finished “Time Lord Immemorial”.

I think it is a good story and a vital part of the Degeneration plotline of the series.
The cast of this doesn’t feel as “dartboard” as some of the other pairings of these stories, though Liv could have been replaced by any other companion and the story would play out the same.

Did three stories yesterday and three today (so far), and I am really enjoying these stories. Knowing what to expect from this anniversary range helps with the enjoyment - but that of course raises the question: is it a good story if it takes hindsight and repeated listenings to properly enjoy them?

I will crack on with “The Union”

My experience with this exactly. Relistening without the expectation and the month gap between each release did help but, as you say, that’s no real consolation when the original release cycle and approach contributed to a feeling of disappointment.

I can resist anything except temptation, and so I’ve dived into Zygon: 1901: The Unknowing Mirror by Jonathan Barnes.

A first-rate cast with a variety of wonderful voices (horror-ific Jonathan Rigby especially), nice subtle sound design, and a genuinely creepy story, beautifully told. Is that enough superlatives? All earned, believe me.

Intelligent, intriguing, mature and guaranteed to get under the skin, this is highly recommended.

Oooh, I’m even more excited to get to this now! Currently listening to Auf Wiedersehen, and then I’m coming for this baby!

Just to say a little more about this opening Zygon story.

I greatly enjoyed it, and as the director says, it is quite a different story for our suckered friends - it works beautifully. Jonathan Barnes brings his Holmesian fondness for fine dialogue and a slow-burning plot. There’s a ‘banging’ (that’s a compliment, by the way) theme tune from Andy Hardwick. I’ve criticised AH in the past for seemingly providing the same score for about 30 stories! But here, he’s on fire.

The performances as I’ve said previously, are rich and great to listen to, but it is the tale and its atmospherics that shine here. To think, almost 25 years ago (I remember it well), BF were tentatively trying out their Dalek Empire series to see if the metal blighters could carry a story without The Doctor. All these years later, we have solo Krynoids on the horizon, and here, Zygons are proving that not only can their threat sustain an ongoing tale, but thrive within it! Oh yes!

I finished “The Union”.

Once and Future just works for me this time round.
I’ll leave it at that here and jump over to the designated Once and Future topic so I can be a bit more spoilerific.

I am two minutes into Coda, and just had to find a :adhesive_bandage: because I cut my finger peeling potatoes because of the Time Ram gag :joy:

Love how Coda picks up the second “The Union” ended.

The First Sontarans has a lot going on, and pretty much all good. It wasn’t exactly the origin story I was expecting. In fact, I’d reconciled myself to the fact that the only “First Sontarans” in it were the First Sontaran Fleet before there was any inkling we’d hear anything about their origins.

In the end, better than any other Sixth Doctor-Sontaran story I can think of.

Finished Zygon Century episode 2 earlier and I am still in shock, the first episode I found a little disappointing but this one was just phenomenal, some really great character writing and development and some good handling or more sensitive themes, I’m part way through the third episode now and will finish it later on, but I’m enjoying it so far

Listened to House of Silents, it was good but for some reason I can barely remember what happened in it.
