Finally! The world’s greatest love story that never was! And it plays out in a Target novel?!?!?

It is not that much. But we have stuff like this:

“Ian felt the ultimate in despair, his confidence deserting him, making him a prey to all the doubts and fears about Barbara he had so successfully pushed to one side, in the belief Richard would help. He hardly felt Vicki put a hand on his arm, scarcely saw the sympathy in her eyes. He only knew that the woman he loved was far away, in dangerous hands, while he was absolutely powerless to save her”

That’s so sweet! Best TARDIS couple ever!

Yes, better even than Amy/Rory, the Doctor/River and (God forbid!) Ten/Rose…

I think as time has gone on I’m probably less kind to the whole thing than I was when I made that video. I’ll have to go back and see what I said myself but I remember enjoying the latter 3 (obviously Coda wasn’t out at that point) enough that I felt things had wrapped up nicely enough while still finding the first 4 a bit drab.

You weren’t particularly kind at the time

No it was a good review on the merits and detriments of the collected stories. You brought up a couple of things that apparently went over my head the first time round, so I had no choice but to listen once more :slightly_smiling_face:

Once and Future kind of suffers from “Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Syndrome”. Too much reliance on nostalgia and a lack of a solid plan for it’s execution.

I do remember thinking the first 4 were weak, with the exception of A Genius for War but even that only being good in a standalone capacity. But then I am a sucker for the Doctor and Davros verbally sparring!

And that’s an excellent description of Once and Future’s biggest stumbling block. I like the Star Wars sequel trilogy more than most (before it falls of a cliff with IX) but can’t deny it relies on nostalgia incredibly heavily. Once and Future can become atrophied by it.

A Genius for War is like the only one of the first few O&F stories I can remember anything about at all  I should probably relisten to that too, but it’s not high on my list at all…

Finished “The Artist at the End of Time”.

I think I am enjoying Once and Future this time around?
That is a good story with a very good idea behind it.
Peter Davison and Georgia Tennant just sparks off of each other, the really lean into the father/daughter relationship they have (twice), and then you throw Colin Baker’s curator into the mix? That was fantastic.

The scene with the Doctor teaching the Curator to skim stones

I am two for two on the enjoyment scale so far.
Next up “A Genius for War” - I think this was the one I liked the most the first time around :+1: (Well except for Coda :slightly_smiling_face:)

Perhaps it’s better without the pressure of being a “big, important celebration of 60th anniversary”

I need to re-listen at some point too!

Listening to The Yearn today. These stories always make me laugh - they give some brilliant lines to 11 and Valarie. Good story too. There is definitely some alchemy going on here, some magic touch that makes these stories just sing.

Finished “A Genius for War”.

This is a fantastic story!
Davros, the 7th Doctor, Ken Bones’ General, Veklin!

Does it have anything to do with the Degeneration plot? Absolutely not. But this time round I know this, and thus care much less about it.

I’ve listened to the first three stories today and modified my ratings to a 4/5 :star: , and two 4,5/5 :star: - both of those with a favourite .

I am a happy Scandinavian (:wave::money_with_wings:)

I finished the audiobook of At Childhood’s End today. To be honest, I nearly stopped listening during the first quarter or so, because I absolutely hated the way Ace was calling herself only Dorothy and treated Ace as just a childish nickname. But once she got more involved in adventures again, that stopped for the most part and I was able to enjoy the story. Overall, I liked it.

There’s been a bit of a weird obsession with Ace wanting to drop her nickname - there was that whole McShane thing in the audios which never stuck either. I don’t know why people seem to think it’s such an issue.

Listening to Master tonight while I make tea. It is odd that I consider this a comfort listen…?

I’m currently listening to The Curse Of Time! Absolutely in love with the setting and the story dealing with the afterwards of The Ark In Space!

It’s one of my favorites audios, and I strangely consider it such a comfort listen too hahaha

Is it any good as a 50th anniversary story for the Fourth Doctor?

Also, welcome to the site!

I recommend you make a topic in Introductions to introduce yourself!

I will admit that I didn’t listen to this one yet! Absolutely gonna listen after finishing this one and the Zygon Century that just released! But the story is very solid with great moments, loving it!
And I will introduce myself right now there! Thanks for welcoming me! Just heard about this community and I’m loving here!

Good to know, I’ve got it on the shelf waiting it’s turn. I’ll know to give it a chance to bed in.
