Thanks for this @MrColdStream - saves me ripping the audio and creating a new podcast out of them!!
That is soooo cool!
Playing with Podcast Republic and transferring my podcasts to it. Much nicer and user friendly than Podbean and a lot of features it seems for organising. I like!
It’s a great app! The organisation and customisation options are great, and it’s frequently updated as well!
Finished Dark Gallifrey War Master last night. That was definitely weird. I think I liked Part 2 the best. I’m also very interested to see where (and with who) next year’s trilogies go considering we’ve essentially gotten the prologue (since Morbius never reached Dark Gallifrey) and the self-stated epilogue (which also sees the destruction of Dark Gallifrey). I wonder if they’ll show us the creation of the Imbomination? And who will be featured in next year’s trilogies?
SONTARANS vs RUTANS: The Battle of Giant’s Causeway
An interesting puzzle, as the Doctor, Charley and C’rizz encounter a Sontaran force that seem to think they are Roman legionnaires. It’s a relatively well realised setting and I found it easy to visualise the mists and the causeway itself. The story, however, felt a little slow to develop until the halfway point and the revelation of the Rutan presence. Once the Rutans showed themselves, the story suddenly gained much needed momentum. I actually found myself feeling sympathetic towards the Sontarans, bereft of their own memories and facing an age old enemy that they cannot even remember.
Overall, I enjoyed this release. Whilst not a peak Sontaran story, there was plenty to delight in. An interesting start to the short “Sontarans vs Rutans” series. I’m curious to see where it goes next!
I just finished the first War Master season (Only the Good).
I don’t quite know what to make of it, it seems like the series doesn’t have a clear through line - like Big Finish got the licence to use Derek Jacobi’s Master and rushed too much to just get something out there. I enjoyed it well enough, but wasn’t over the moon about it.
And the whole thing about the Master making wine in the Sky Man was so drawn out, this is the Master, of course the whole part about wine needing time to be perfect was a simile about Cole not being ready yet for whatever purpose the Master had for him - it just seemed so hamfisted and unnecessarily elongated. Also I had no particular feelings towards Cole so the doomed romance just did nothing for me as the end result seemed kind of obvious.
Are all the seasons of the War Master just random adventures alà the Main Range for the Doctor, or do seasons to come have more of an arc storyline in them?
By coincidence I just read this by @Shayleen and will post it here for you (I’ve not listened to any more than series 1 of War Master yet):
Thanks That’s good to know! That’s what I really prefer from these season box-sets
Me too although I really enjoyed The Sky Man. It helped that I listened to it twice!
I am of similar mind, although I confess I do really love “Only the Good”. I think it hangs together very well. In all honesty, it did take me a couple of listens to fully get into “The Sky Man” but it does some really interesting things.
I gave that one a 3,5/5 so it’s not like I didn’t enjoy it
I just found it too predictable and I don’t think I knew Cole enough to actually care that deeply about his predicament.
Only the Good was good just not spectacular
Oh 100% agree.
I don’t think I’ve actually come out and said it yet, but I thought Only the Good was ridiculously overrated and The Sky Man was really nothing special.
See, I liked the simile a lot despite it being a bit hamfisted. It seems quite on brand for The Master to not really be doing anything to hide his malicious intent towards somebody and them being too naive to know better. The Sky Man is the best one on that box set for me.
Beneath The Viscoid, now that’s the ropey one.
EDIT - I’ve tried to lock in my disparate listening so I can get some sets finished. I’m well into Companion Chronicles Season 4 now, currently listening to Bernice Summerfield and the Criminal Code. I’ve warmed to Bernie an awful lot in recent months, and at some point will probably figure out who would win in a fight between her and River Song in the tunnel under the Natural History Museum.
Sadly this story is just so-so. Companion Chronicles are so hit and miss for me so far, and it’s really hard for me to just glaze over if they’re not interesting, although I will say that the portrayal of a rather defeated and stressed Seventh Doctor here trying to manage peace talks adds a nice layer to his character; as much as Seven wants to be an advocate for peace, he is unfortunately far better suited to chaos. It’s so strangely symmetrical, because I often think that Seven wishes he were more like Five, and Five unfortunately has to become Seven in the end. There’s a tragedy there that I think is almost exemplified by Six, the Doctor between, caught between his chaotic nature and his strong love of justice.
Listening The Silent City before the only class in the week. The teacher made the interesting topic of counseling for teens extremely dull. A part of me want to continue the adventure with lovely 7th Doctor
I think this is really nicely put, yes. The Doctor is always best when there’s that underlying tension. I think there are elements of such internal contrasts and tensions in pretty much every Doctor’s portrayal.
Back to the Companion Chronicles, and back to horribly bleak imagined futures for our favorite companions. Having had plenty of time away from Leela’s arc in this series, it’s always jarring to be reminded that Leela spends the end of her life trapped in a weird dying city of stasis pods with a society of deeply traumatized humans.
At least that’s what I’m gathering from the start of The Time Vampire, anyway. The rest of the story seems to mostly be about K-9.
I am struggling to get through Dark Eyes, I cannot lie. Dark Eyes 2 to about halfway through 3 has just consistently been mid, mid, mid (aside from the Master stories, Alex Macqueen is a gem). Gonna try locking in and finishing 3 today.
Finally past the Five & Nyssa solo adventures in my quest to listen to Five’s era in approximate chronological order. Up to The Waters of Amsterdam and Tegan My Beloved
Have been sifting through various podcasts after downloading Podcast Republic on @MrColdStream 's recommendation.
I’m still struggling to find decent podcasts about genre TV that aren’t the amazing Toby Hadoke. Most of the Doctor Who ones just irritate me.
Going to start listening to The End on the way home tonight.
