Pretty much my exact reaction
Started the new Dark Gallifrey yesterday, but didn’t get very far. Listened to most of the new episode of The Doctor’s Beard podcast this morning, then it’s back to 1634: The Galileo Affair before I pick Dark Gallifrey back up later this afternoon.
I’ve been listening through the 8th Doctor monthly adventures stuff and just finished the next life.
I wonder what other people imagined kro’ka looked like, because he’s described oddly with not a lot of detail. I imagined him looking like a blob with spindly legs, but maybe if I thought about it a bit more I’d give him some actual features. He was one of my favourite characters from that arc.
I listened to The Maltese Penguin - fine, but not spectacular.
I also listened to Spare Parts - heartbreaking, intense, masterpiece!
Ticked off Dark Gallifrey War Master 3 and I’m not sure this series is for me unfortunately.
Then did the studio version of The Stuff of Legend which I really enjoyed. It was also really fun to see how, even with the studio version, he script had been tailored to work both as audio and on stage. Very fun story.
Are there any “requisite” stories to listen to for the War Master Dark Gallifrey stories?
I have heard the Morbius stories
(I’ve only heard a few scattered stories with Derek Jacobi and only started his “main series” today)
I think all you need to know is who the War Master, Benny and John Hart are, and that Benny traveled with the David Warner Unbound Doctor. This trilogy actually acts as epilogue to the rest.
Yeah see I did not know Benny travelled with the Unbound Doctor…
New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volumes 3-7.
I feel like I still don’t understand what the series (dark gallifrey) is about, despite it being two stories in. I feel like it was advertised as being about the title characters, but it isn’t really. It only seems to be vaguely about “dark galifrey” too since it was only mentioned in the morbius story, and now it’s been reduced to a marble in the War Master one.
I started listening to them originally in case I needed the context for the monk/nun one. I really hope that story doesn’t disappoint when it comes out eventually
Listening to Dark Gallifrey: War Master Part 3 and it’s amazing how good of casting Jonathon Carley is. He sounds exactly like john Hurt to point where if I didn’t know, I couldn’t tell the difference.
Randomizer spit out one of the Novel Adaptations for me today, Original Sin. Get’s a 3.5 from me, that might improve when I listen again having actually read the book it’s based on.
The VNAs are mostly uncharted territory for me - they’re on my list after all the Target novs, although I do dip in every now and again; I started The Room With No Doors but didn’t finish it.
The continuity on this one is a bit weird if you haven’t read them, I think. I realized from the off that Tobias Vaughn was someone I should probably remember, but I still had to Google him; I guess when the book was written using a recurring character from the Second Doctor’s era was maybe a bit more viable? Either way, it was confusing for a moment but a quick search cleared it all up, and there was some intriguing moralistic dialogue between The Doctor and the villains here; novel Seven is clearly much more pragmatic. “Killing is wrong except when it isn’t, and I know better.” That’s a really strong line, plus a really definitive take on The Doctor’s attitude to violence, one I doubt the television show is going to bump up against anytime soon.
Sometimes I let my Randomizer picks dive me into a new series marathon, but I think I’ll leave the Novel Adaptations for a while until I’ve read the books. I feel the context might improve them for me.
Thankfully, I’ve already read Goth Opera, so I can have a little treat.
GALLIFREY 1.1: Weapon of Choice
Yes, I know we’ll be covering this soon enough in Audio Club Extra, but I just had to relisten and enjoy because it’s been too long. I shall hold off more specific comments until it comes around in AC Extra but I shall say this…
Leela and Romana
K9 Mks I and II
Politics, scheming and subterfuge.
Braxiatel and Narvin
Hello old friends. Here we go again!
Started listening to Susan’s War: Family Ties and since it was part of the audio club lately, I’ve started the Excelis trilogy for the first time. Really enjoying the first story so far!
Finished DG: The War Master. Really enjoyed this one. It’s a bit timey wimey (especially in the first hour) so I might need a relisten.
The War Master and Captain John form a surprisingly good duo. This series was compared unfavorably to once and future because of the seemingly random smattering of characters but I think it works a lot better here for me. The longer runtime helps and there are some story decisions that mean that lots of time isn’t wasted on characters introducing themselves.
Haven’t yet listened to the moribius release. Does it have any prerequisites I should tick off first?
I finally figured out a way to listen to @ChrisStokes’ wonderful reviews - my podcast app allows adding YouTube channels as podcasts. So now I’ll be listening to a lot more of these!
Oooh - which app is that?
It’s Podcast Republic. It’s available for Android, not sure about iOS.
I think the only other thing you need to fully understand it is the brain of Morbius serial
I was hoping you’d say Android!
