“Silver Nemesis” has always been a strange one for me. It feels like two stories bolted together. It has many moments I love but is not successful as a story in its own right. It is a story I need to re-evaluate and am looking forward to the Season 25 Collection release.
It’s certainly fun, but I’m genuinely confused by Silver Nemesis not being considered good. Like what is there not to love about it? (Isn’t a fun story also a good story in any case, in the vast majority of cases?) The only actual criticism of it I’ve heard is “the Cybermen die too easily”, which, I guess fair, if that bothers you? They kinda do in Earthshock too tho. And is that really the only reason it’s the one story of those last two seasons to be as widely derided/ignored as it is? (This isn’t all directed specifically at you, @sircarolyn, just to be clear; you just reminded me of something I’m frequently baffled by)
I think the biggest reasons why SIlver Nemesis is considered ‘bad’ is that it’s very silly - which I for one really like, I love my Who silly - and that the plot take a little bit of accepting what is laid out in front of you to enjoy, and I think a lot of people don’t like it when stories ask them to be generous with going along for the ride. But I do agree with you, it doesn’t deserve its position as one of the worst Seven stories, and if ‘confusing’ is the complaint, then Ghost Light is also right there.
I’d say 13 era as a whole is underrated. I don’t love it and have tonnes of issues but the way some folks talk about it you’d think it physically harmed them and their families
I quite like Paradise Towers as well! Not a great episode but a fun time and I don’t understand why apparently a lot of people hate it other than the villain becoming a lot less likeable in the final part when he’s forced to ham it up to silly degrees
Well, I am the official drumbanger for The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, so I am obligated to mention it here. I like it way better than some of the other, much better regarded Christmas stories.
I also think The Seeds of Death is not as universally loved as it deserves to be. To its detractors, I say bah!
So I’ll stop there, with one of the top two Androzani stories and one of the top two Seeds stories.
Don’t you say “bah” to me good sir for not enjoying six episodes where nothing but foam can be seen on my screen!
Well that and Miss Kelly
The skinheads and the rich American in the limo don’t help its reputation.
I don’t mind it but it’s still the least of the McCoys.
I think you’ll find I’m the official drumbanger for TDTWATW. I’ve written a review and everything.
DRUM BATTLE!!!
- Uniquet Dead
- Fear Her
- Asylum of the Daleks (except the Amy and Rory subplot)
- Rest of series 7a
- Hide
- Journey to the Center of the TARDIS
- Sleep No More
- Hellbent
Never understood the hate for that one myself. It’s good fun, and the only disappointment is that Bill Bailey’s role is so small.
Those parts are so fun though! The “social workers” thing is one of the best gags in the whole show
Did you mean to post this in “Underrated Stories”? It feels like something that’s more suited to the “Currently Listening” post.
Oh , yeah, that’s where it was supposed to be. Thanks!
From my point of view it is a thematic problem. I find the Lady Peinforte thread doesnt gel at all for me with the cyberman plot thread. Both threads are fine on their own but get in each other’s way. When Peinforte’s on screen, the cyberman thread feels sidelined/diluted and vice versa. Both are worthy of carrying their own story. Lady Peinforte is an excellent (and rather different) villain who deserved her own story to shine in. Likewise, the cybermen are top tier iconic DW villains who end up feeling a little inconsequential. It is fun and has some great sequences, but feels less than the sum of its parts to me. I’ll happily enjoy the new shiny blu ray upscale, but can’t help feeling that it could have been so much better.
I love Paradise Towers. It’s wonky and Briers definitely hams it up, but the substance of the story is great. It certainly suffers from production issues and Mel’s obsession with the swimming pool is silly, but the story works really well at a thematic level. Also, it’s the first tine we get glimpses of the Seventh Doctor proper.
Watching “Delta and the Bannermen” yesterday, for some reason or another, Ray reminded me of Lady Christina.
Have to say: I really love Planet of the Dead. It’s a clear 4.5/5 for me, and obviously, I am pretty much alone with this assessment as the episode has an average rating of 2.89.
No you’re not. I quite enjoy Planet of the Dead too. It’s nothing outstanding, but it is a lot of fun.
I’ve only watched it once as I somehow had no idea it existed until last year, but I enjoyed Planet of the Dead quite a bit, too.
