In this day and age nothing should be ratings driven! Time and time again, its been proven that sometimes shows take a little while to take off and ratings can improve through word of mouth, catch up, binging.
I know this is different because it’s BBC but the ratings for The Traitors first series weren’t great but it got word of mouth and lots of people watched it on iPlayer and then the second season was massive.
One difference with things like The Traitors is that it was probably cheap. Apparently The Acolyte cost $180 million! The downside of all these lavish looking tv shows is that they have to be seen as a big hit for them to continue & for whatever reason the ratings for The Acolyte dropped off significantly. All Disney care about is profit at the end of the day. Netflix seem to be the most guilty of cancelling shows after 1 season.
I think part of the problem is that first of all, everything is so expensive. Most people can’t afford to subscribe to every streaming service and so usually just pick one or two. Plus, you also have to pay for Internet. So, people are forking over almost $200 for a streaming service or two and fast enough internet to watch it.
Secondly, everyone is still striving for event TV when that doesn’t really exist anymore. Not like it used to be when a network show was on the same night at the same time for everyone.
Finally, there’s way too much stuff. People have to choose what to watch and only have so much time in the day to watch it. Do you watch Disney’s latest show, or Netflix’s, or do you watch the latest Hallmark movie, or do watch your favorite episode of Doctor Who for the fiftieth time? The streaming services are so concerned with outcompeting each other that they striving for quantity over quality.
So true. There are so many streaming services now & its all about grabbing viewers with a big epic flashy show. With so much choice a lot of people have got very short attention spans. I include myself in that, watched the first episode of The Acolyte thought it was crap so never bothered with any more.
I’ve heard—possibly on Kristian Harloff’s show—that Disney is overthinking all of their Star Wars programming. The viewer counts for the last few projects (not only The Acolyte) didn’t seem to match their expectations relative to the costs.
I think there’s still hope they’ll return to the story later on, once they’ve figured out exactly what they want to do. Disney is only ever moved by money, not by fan opinions or review bombings, in my opinion. Long-term viewing numbers may very well sway their opinion regarding The Acolyte.
Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a movie? Only time will tell.
Would not surprise me if they were overthinking things. Disney seems to have only figured out that the Owl House was really popular after they cancelled it. They put the abbreviated 3 episode last season up on youtube, and saw the number of views long after the point that they could just reverse direction on the cancellation…
I finished the first season of Broadchurch and I rather liked it. The pacing was good and I liked the characters. I wasn’t expecting the twist. Me and my mom thought it was Nigel .
Watched Series 3 of The Outlaws which continued to be brilliant. Funny and dramatic and the characters have really become a group you want to spend time with. No idea if they are planning any more beyond this series (as the overarching plot of all three series more or less wrapped up) but wouldn’t be adverse to revisiting them at some point.
We’ve been revisiting Bones of late. It’s an enjoyable and easy watch. Angela is the sonic screwdriver of the group, in that her capabilities and those of her computers expand and contract to fit in with the requirements of the plot. We call out “tappa, tappa, tappa” as she deftly hits a few keys and magically creates image resolution out of thin air sometimes, or, for some reason, can’t blow up a CCTV image enough for them to identify a suspect. I get a bit annoyed by the 3D holographic Angelator, used in the early series to show how the various projected versions of the crimes might have been committed. I guess it’s similar to the technology used on the recent ABBA concerts, but I still doubt that it cooule be used in a lab in the way it’s shown. The rest of the Bones universe mainly uses normal technology, but it vastly exaggerates what computers can do. That aside, it’s an enjoyable show that I can take my brain off the hook in front of, and a procedural that’s formulaic enough to not trigger any anxieties, which is important to me right now, because I’ve been going through a low mental health phase. Predictable TV that’s low on the kind of day to day conflict that soaps portray. I get massive anxiety spikes when people shout at one another, especially over normal day to day misunderstandings.
Finally got round to Douglas is Cancelled. I liked it well enough but didn’t get as much out of it as everyone who told me to watch it seemed to.
Currently 2 episodes left of the final season of The Umbrella Academy. I have really enjoyed this show. The waits between seasons have always meant I’ve forgotten certain plot points and details but the characters have been so much fun.
Since she joined, Ritu Arya as Lila consistently steals the show. A shame it’s over but a really strong run.
I think a lot of what I liked about it was the interplay between the characters. Hugh Bonneville, Alex Kingston and Karen Gillan were spectacular in their roles.
And that third episode in the hotel room, by Pandak the Third was that tough to watch.
One thing that kind of was lost on me was the little sequences with Joe Wilkinson in the car at the end of each episode, if that was meant to be funny it went over my head…
Just the finale of Drag Race Canada vs the World left to watch. Glad Cheryl has made it to the final but Le Fil went out too early (definitely compared to the shallowness that is Fiercalicious - glad she’s finally gone). All said though, and bearing in mind she was first out in UK vs the World, it’s been lovely to see Lemon showing what a great queen she is and I’d love for her to win.
Sunday night I watched most of a baseball game. Houston Astros vs Baltimore Orioles. The game got off to a slow start, but it seemed to get more exciting after dinner, when the Astros scored three runs when I wasn’t looking. The Orioles managed to tie it up for a little while to 3-3, but the Astros managed to score two runs back to back, as well as another run in there somewhere to get a final score of 6-3 Astros. One of the Astros outfielders ran into a wall at full speed trying to catch the ball, which seemed to be quite painful for him.
