It’s Tosh-centric, so that’s great, but apart from that, this episode isn’t really anything special.
Oh, and it has Jack being transphobic so that takes my rating down by two points.
4/10
I love this one, I think the only bad thing about it is Jack being a bit OOC, but outside of lore, Alice’s mother had died a few days prior to this episode airing, so in my mind, his anger towards Mary is fueled by the passing of Alice’s mother
I know a lot of people hate this one but I am a Tosh lover first and foremost and she shines in this one <33 maybe the TW episode I have watched most
It’s a story centred on a boring character, so even if the plot with the alien stuck on Earth and the mind-reader pendant is somewhat interesting I don’t really think it reaches higher than a 2,5/5
Overall I feel like I am liking Torchwood season 1 less this time around…
There’s some really fun stuff in here, but yeah, Jack’s tranphobic rant isn’t great
What really brings this down for me though is just how jarring the editing is in this story, there’s at least 10 times in this story where we get 5 shots in the space of two seconds, and I hate it.
5/10
omg tv club exists, and here i thought its only audio. HAAAAAA
@Mattie1711, there’s actually four clubs: Television > TV Club, Audio > Audio Club, Books > Book Club, and Comics > Comic Club.
I like this one. It’s not groundbreaking, but it is interesting. A solid 3.5/5
Here’s my thoughts from when I watched this back in August:
So this episode is one of those that fall in between two really strong episodes and is subsequently a bit forgettable. There are good and bad things with it, but it’s not one of the better episodes of S1.
Greeks Bearing Gifts is an episode filled with good ideas that don’t quite come together as well as they should. It gives Toshiko much-needed character focus, and the exploration of her insecurities and frustrations is one of the episode’s strongest aspects. However, the story relies on predictable twists, underdeveloped subplots, and a romance that never feels entirely genuine.
Despite some solid performances—Naoko Mori does a fantastic job portraying Toshiko’s growing confidence and subsequent heartbreak—the episode lacks the depth and tension needed to make it a standout. While it’s always nice to see an underused character get their time in the spotlight, Greeks Bearing Gifts ultimately feels like a missed opportunity to do something truly special with Toshiko’s character.
Please feel free to read my full review:
That was certainly an episode of all time, the whole mind reading character drama was interesting, but towards the end the episode just fell apart for me, it was just a real lacklustre ending to a pretty ok episode so far.
Idk 6/10 seems fair.
I lowered my rating on this watch and now have it at a 3/5. Tosh is not an interesting character at all, and this episode does not change that. The premise is okay but feels dragged out. There is maybe a good 20-minute story in there. Why did they think that having Gwen cheat with Owen, the human garbage, was a good idea? And even more, why would Tosh like Owen? None of that makes sense. I made a topic the first time I watched Torchwood, and I feel like it is even more relevant now. I will link to it below.
I think it makes sense for her character tbf, especially after Countrycide, she feels a need to be with someone who understands her current life (We see that Suzie deals with it similarly in They Keep Killing Suzie). She also feels guilty and hates herself for cheating (as we see in this story), and I think her cheating with own specifically is also her punishing herself for what she’s doing.
This Tosh slander is heartbreaking ngl
Flashforward to it being one of her “sins” in The Sin Eaters, knowing Tosh liked Owen, and still going through with it. And then all the other sins
I don’t like Gwen, not because she’s bad/boring, but instead because she is such a good complicated character with these grey choices. And it’s the grey choices I disagree with that make up her character.
same like ok some of the writing sucks but have we considered I love her
Have we considered that out of all of the members, Tosh is the least problematic and is actually like…adorable and lovely, and kind? And simultaneously badass?
The more y’all hate on GBG, the more I’m just mentally going to increase my rating
I’d challenge this with the fact that Torchwood is not a comfort show, and I personally never go into a piece of media with the aim to find a character to like. I normally go for the story.
But even then, I also don’t really understand or empathize with the need to see likable characters. My boyfriend had the same critique of Torchwood when he watched it, and it’s something I never considered prior. Personally, it’s about a more realistic depiction of human nature, it explores both bad and good traits unapologetically.
Ended up favourting Tosh and Ianto, probably because they’re the most emotionally vulnerable (imo) which contests with the organization.
My Master loves Tosh, therefore I love her too!
Yeah, she’s always overlooked and both intelligent and well-meaning and much more capable than she seems.
Precisely this. We have likeable characters in DW and SJA. Owen, for instance, is never meant to be likeable. He’s an arsehole and a pretty awful human being in many ways, but he also shows redeeming qualities in some stories. He is, in essence, a believable human character with positive and negative traits. And certainly more so than Captain Jack. This is why I like Owen as a character, even if he is very far removed from my personality.
