The War Games - In Colour (announcement)

With The Daleks in Colour last year, and The War Games in Colour this year, wonder what Pertwee story they’ll do in Colour next year /j

Well, if we are being serious, the colourisation of the monochrome prints of Invasion of the Dinosaurs isn’t very good, so it could use an upgrade

Introducing Invasion of the Dinosaurs in Colour: In Colour!

I love that story! It is underrated just because the dinosaurs are ugly.

I remember going to The Dinosaur Museum in Dorset as a kid where they’ve got one of the original models

Hopefully we will get some updated CG FX for the dinos when S11 is released. It would greatly improve the story.

Pretty sure that one isn’t in the episode.

Seems to me like there have been a fair amount of cgi dinosaurs in Doctor Who recently. Wonder if they were doing CGI dinosaurs for season 11, and decided to throw dinosaurs in a few other places while they were at it, to save money?

The museum definitely seems to imply it was at the very least, I’ll have to keep an eye out when I eventually get to it

I’ve seen a few places claim to have things from Doctor Who in them which quite obviously aren’t  .

The story itself is great. The only thing better dinosaurs would do is stop fans from getting hung up on them.

Oh that’s a blast from the past.

Since the colourisations are also edited versions I guess they could just make a similarly edited down version of a 3rd doctor story continuing the trend… I don’t think that would be a worthwhile thing to do but they could :face_in_clouds:

Yeah no it’s really not, if they’re going to cut down a 3rd doctor story, do it for a TotT, not a ‘colourisation’ if you really need to

I would actually love to see some edited down and potentially remastered versions of a few stories for each classic Doctor. I think the length and pacing of a lot of classic stories makes it difficult for a lot of modern fans to get into, and it would be really nice to have some feature length edits that are more approachable for those fans to get to know the classic Doctors and potentially ease them into more of Classic Who

This is exactly my approach as well. I’m happy the two versions can coexist. Much as we love the original 10 episodes (and I genuinely believe it’s surprisingly taut for such a long story), I understand that both the B&W AND length would put iff many newer casual viewers. If even a handful of people watch it and enjpy it who would never have watched the original then it’s a success for me. Bedides, I’m sure the production team will have been well aware of the criticism that The Daleks in Colour received (much as I loved it).

I think it will work better than the original version, to be honest. I love The War Games, but there’s a lot of padding, and cutting it down to 90 minutes will drastically improve the pace of it.

Or make it an incomprehensible mess as happened with The Daleks. But we have to wait and see!

I think The Daleks is much harder to cut down personally, because a lot of the scenes in the seven episodes are essential to understanding the story as a whole. The War Games, by comparison, has a lot of repetitive scenes of people standing around talking, and not doing much. I love The War Games, but a tighter edit could work wonders for a modern audience.

That’s a good point. I’m slightly sceptical, but then again, I find the original surprisingly breezy considering its length.

Me too. I think the original is a genuinely extraordinary piece of TV. Quite groundbreaking in some respects. I’m really looking forward to the cut-down colour version (because what they’ve released promotionally LOOKS fantastic) but am seeing it very much as a lovely extra, not in any way a replacement. I hope to enjoy both versions, just in different ways.
