My intial reaction was that 90 minutes is a lot to cut out but on reflection, one of the criticisms levelled at The War Games is that the middle episodes involve a lot of capture and escape on repeat so maybe it will benefit from losing that.
At the end of the day, the original isn’t going anywhere so it’s always interesting to see these, even if only as an experiment.
(I must buy The Daleks in Colour because I understand it’s now gone from iPlayer).
I think I read on Bluesky that it was leaving but I and/or they could be wrong.
ETA: Nope, it’s gone but the Audio Described version is still there because, according to the info, they tend to be broadcast a few days later and so the expiry is a few days later as well.
I never bothered to watch it because I liked the original just fine, but now I feel the need to watch it while I still have the chance… perhaps with my eyes closed, since it’s all being described…
Mixed feelings, especially about the regeneration. I still maintain that this was the most traumatic regeneration ever, due to the fact that the last sight my six year-old self had of the Second Doctor was his faceless body falling through a black void. There was no immediate cut to Jon Pertwee tumbling out of the TARDIS on Earth, no, I would have to wait until January 1970 for that. In the meantime, I was haunted by that final image of the Doctor crying out in distress as his face was stolen away from him. Doing away with that in favor of a CGI firework display… I dunno, we’ll see.
The War Games had a huge impact on me as a child and remains very important to me. I really hope they don’t screw it up.
I will say, as someone who skipped most of those early episodes, The War Games was one of the only ones I watched all the way through without once becoming bored or confused. I don’t think this is the best choice to be cut down that much. There are episodes that could use that treatment way more.
Yeah. While I disagree with a lot of the decisions with these, I’ll just watch the original and let those who enjoy these color ones enjoy them. If it gets someone to see The War Games and get interested in classic Doctor Who, I see that as a win in the end.
I’m pessimistic, I don’t trust them to do it well after Daleks In Color
Once this comes out I’m going to look up online to see if anyone did a better job
… I can’t be the only one who would have liked ‘The War Games’ to be longer, surely?
While the color does look beautiful, I wish the episode wasn’t shortened. I know that some people feel the episode is too long though, so I guess maybe it would have been nice if there could be short and full length color versions available, but I can understand how that would take significantly more time and effort to do.
I think I also prefer keeping the episode otherwise as it originally aired without changing the regeneration scene.
