The Savages: animated release in 2025

Currently quoted release date: 24th March 2025.

"First broadcast in four weekly parts from 28 May to 18 June 1966. In this early story, the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane), arrive on an unnamed planet where they encounter two distinct people - the Elders and the Savages.

They soon discover the Elders are the evil ones, draining the primitive Savages for their life source to remain young and powerful forever. This story marks the final appearance of Purves as Steven.

This will be a three-disc release including all four animated episodes in colour and black and white, plus brand-new bonus features."

Well that’s an instant preorder from me. I absolutely love this serial. Such an underrated gem.

The recon is ropey, but the story is quality IMO.

Funny that they are animating the one that absolutely no one voted for when I polled which serial to watch next…

Between this and the Celestial Toymaker, the recent animations are a big win for us Dodo stans

Yes! Finally!

I love The Savages! It’s severely underrated and I hope the animation helps people see the greatness of the story! Can’t wait to watch it!

I nearly voted for it. Interesting that everyone thought The Smugglers was going to be the next Hartnell.

Is it just me? The link to the Amazon page doesn’t seem to be working?

Do we know anything about what style of animation they are going to use?

Maybe Amazon had to take it down. Got told off for putting it on their site too early.

You’re right, it’s gone!
Although it was late last night, it definitely wasn’t a dream . Should have taken a screen shot .

From what I gather, it’s a 2D animation from the BBC Studios, so in similar style to The Macra Terror and The Underwater Menace.

So Galaxy Four style not Toymaker style.

That’s fine by me.

And more Dodo!

I think that this looks good!!!

Yup. I think DW looks better in a “traditional” animation style. It’s a shame there is no consistency across the range.

I thought the animation used for Toymaker was perfect for the story. I don’t have an issue with the animations being different from each other because the majority are in the current style with just a few different ones where there are good reasons why (Reign and Moonbase, for example, are fitting between exisitng episodes and were done long before the current run; Toymaker was playing to the story’s surrealness; Web of Fear was an experiment for one episode in a mostly existing story).

I always boggle at the fact these releases are designed to cater for as many tastes as possible - colour animation, black and white, the reconstructions. Doctor Who fans are so very lucky with these releases.
