And we have to remember that a while back it looked like they’d have to stop making these animations due to the lack of funding! And now they keep them coming!
I have not seen the Toymaker one yet. I will do that when I get to it during my current classic watch.
Yes, it would be nice if each Doctor had their own distinct style. They seem to change the type of animation a lot. Toymaker was just awful, looked like PS2 game cut scenes.
It wasn’t my favourite, but after a little while I got used to it. Still not great, but it is an improvement on the recon.
Couldn’t disagree more
- it was a great watch for me. I don’t think it would work on all the stories but it definitely fitted that story and allowed them to play with the oddness of the story.
It’s definitely an improvement on the recon, but doesn’t change the fact that it’s a boring story!
Is there perhaps a case of Lost in Translation going on here because apparently the Finnish word for boring is easily confused with ‘innovative, marvellous and a bit odd’…
Nah, I know parts of it are dullllllllll but I can’t help but admire its imagination. I actually only gave the story 3/5 but I gave the animation 4.5/5). Would it be out of place if I drew your attention to my review of the original story…
Ah well, slipped the link in now. What you gonna do?
I thought the Elders were meant to have gold skin, maybe that was a myth I had heard or something. Obviously they’re not going to animate Frederick Jaeger in blackface, but I was curious if they were going to do something showing the appearance differences between the Elders and the people they call savages. Maybe it will be to the story’s benefit if they just look the same as each other. Either way, The Savages is a good one, not talked about enough, and a good Dodo story too.
Great news that this is going to get the animated treatment. To be honest, I’ve found the animation hit or miss overall, but this looks very good, with some faithful renditions of the regulars.
I’ve listened to the audio many times and I can’t help but think it features Jackie Lane’s (not Trent as I originally called her) best performance as Dodo. Although not given masses to do, she really sells the fear and jeopardy, especially considering how jovial and flippant Dodo often is. Her sadness at leaving Steven is also very powerful - as others have said, this is very underrated. In one of William Hartnell’s later stories, the Doctor doesn’t have much to do either, but what he does is terrific. A word too for Frederic Jaeger as the story’s ‘second’ Doctor (a word also, for Raymond Jones’ terrific score)!
A very welcome addition. Does this mean a Season 3 Boxset is getting nearer?
“Nearer” might be right, but probably still far away. There’s that huge project titled The Daleks’ Masterplan slap bang in the middle of the season, and it’s bound to cause headacahe for the boxset plans.
I think you might mean Jackie Lane, Trent has never played Dodo as far as I’m aware ![]()
The Collection people have said they aren’t waiting for the animation schedule in making their own release schedule, so the effect on the Collection sets is probably minimal. I’m sure whatever animations they have will be there, otherwise we’re getting recons much like The Crusade.
I think you might be absolutely right! I did mean Jackie Lane - thank you! :D
And now I’m thinking just how massive the S4 and S5 sets will be if they’ll have black and white 4:3 animation, color 16:9 animation, and telesnap recons for several stories in them. Bound to be at least 2 disks a story in places. Actually, please do give us a 4:3 black and white for some of them. The earliest of the new animations did 16:9 even on the black and white, which annoys me to no end.
Which is, of course, the correct way to go about things. There’s no guarantee the animations will ever continue past the last one released.
I like how here people are content to just be happy we have an ability to actually see a missing story in moving images we couldn’t before. Other places don’t seem to be as positive. I also like that it looks like they’re keeping it reasonably faithful, unlike the changes in Underwater Menace that made it unrecognizable.
I regularly see people complaining that the animations are ugly and should be made to look like Disney animation (yeah, with what money), or that the BBC should put the money into finding the missing episodes instead (they probably would if they could). Or simply people saying that they’d rather watch telesnaps than an animated estimation (well, feel free, no one forces you to watch the animations).
Yeah, I do not like these animations much tbh but accept the budgetary/time constraints.
That’s good. I think it’s a better fit for this story.
I really enjoyed it, more than The Underwater Menace.
That is a great score. Let’s see what I think in a couple of weeks!
