Radio Times' 20 Best New Who Episodes - Do you agree?

For 2016 they should have picked a Class episode instead of TRODM! It means nothing if they just selected one episode out of the… one episode that year.

There is a lot to admire in Rosa. Maybe not the best episode of the series but a long, long way from being ‘shit’.

I still don’t agree with this list but it’s not giving me a kneejerk wtf reaction so it is vastly, vastly better

I mean I really like Gridlock but picking that over Blink? Or Human Nature/The Family of Blood?

To be fair, the episode was picked by RTD, who didn’t write either of the other 3, I’m not going to get too mad that RTD picked his own episode, even if Blink did get majorly snubbed  :sob:

Yeah that does make sense but even then I’d go with the finale of S3, or even Smith & Jones.

Gridlock has cat people, and I’m fairly biased in favor of episodes with cat people.

I’ve never agreed with any “Best/Top # [Doctor Who-related]” list I’ve seen.

Maybe even he knows Last of the Time Lords isn’t all that good.

Honestly, aside from Ten becoming a gremlin (good idea, bad execution) and the fact that the solution is literally praying The Doctor back to power, I think LotTL is a great time.

I’m pretty sure that RTD has said in the past that Gridlock was his favorite script and that he fealt it was a bit underrated, so I’m not surprised he picked it here.

And it is a very good episode, I just don’t think it’s the best of that year.

So I am just going with each Episode and give my Thoughts to it, prepare yourself for me rambling again (me and rambles? Woah that NEVER happens!!)

In Importance? Yes. In Quality of Introducing a new Audience? Yes. Quality wise? Ehh.. no. I totally get why it’s here but frankly I think this is 99% because of its Importance and not because of its Quality (and I do know there are plenty who love it, which I am happy for those, it’s not a bad Episode, but Top 20 Material? Not at all!)

Competent, but for me, it falls very flat sadly. I think it works if you love TenRose, but sadly I just don’t.

I love Gridlock, not sure if it’s Top 20 Material, but hey I´ll allow it!

…no.

Ehhh I am not the biggest Fan of that Two-Parter, so you can guess where I fall with this one.

I really like this one, but it’s not Top 20 Material for me.

..Complicated feelings on this Episode, so I will spare you with that one, but how is that Top 20?!

Really like it, not in my personal Top 20 (probably? maybe?) But yes totally support this Choice!

I do really like this, but.. I am not sure if it would land in my Top 20 honestly.

First one here which I truly support fully! A Masterclass in Writing, Acting, Directing and Music

..Look I like this one but TOP 20?!

Would rather see World Enough here, but yes I support this one totally.

Hmm.. not Top 20 Material at all, but I can see why this Episode was chosen, personally I would have gone for Demon of the Punjab. But fair enough honestly!

I like it, but again not top 20 Material I find (you could almost do a drinking game with the amount of me saying that!)

I support this. Yes.

Yes. I fully support this. Another Case like Heaven Sent

It’s a bit of a mess, but it’s MY messy Story  Fully support this one

My least favorite 60th Special :sob:

Fair enough but I am not quite sure if that would be the 15 Story I went for, I do like it.

While I do like a lot of them, I honestly only agree with like two or three, five if we take the ones which I can totally see. So yeah, that’s quite the Opposite of my personal List. Really bizarre Selection. Even if I view it through the most important Lense or “Hey that’s good Starting Points” (okay, then a few of them would be much more fair game)

Okay so this is interesting… let me just look at it and see it for myself, again a bit rambley but going to add my Thoughts to their Thoughts (in a bit of a jokey manner of course)!
Hartnell - most are fair enough but 1 for Gunfighters?! And 4 for the Toymaker?!?! :sob: Appreciate the 4/5 for the Smugglers at least!
Throughton - Fair enough
Pertwee - Fair enough but 2/5 for the Time Monster hurts :broken_heart:
Tom - Fair- FACE OF EVIL AT 2/5??? HORNS OF NIMON AT 1/5?!?!?!
Davison - How is Enlightenment at 2.
Colin - Trial of the Timelord at 1 is actually making me sad. I don’t love this Season but come on :sob:
McCoy - Well Remembrance was already mentioned, but ouch Paradise Towers, what do they have against it :sob:
McGann - TOO low!
Eccelston - Fair enough, I guess
Tennant - #JusticeForDaleksInManhattan :pensive: :fist: but fair enough for the most Part.
Smith - It’s funny how a lot of my lowest rated ones are rated fairly highly here :sob: a much bolder one compared to the other of revived Who, fair enough for the most part I gues- why is town called mercy so low, do they hate western?! :sob:
Capaldi - Oh I disagree with A LOT of them. How is sleep no more and mummy with the same rating of 3?! There is a lot which I feel the total Opposite about.
Whittaker - It takes you away at 1. Demons on 3. Witchfinders on 2. :sob:
Tennant 2- Ehh disagree with 2/3, but fair enough.
Gatwa - Fair enough I guess

Honestly while I am being jokey some of those Decisions makes me go “What?!” :sob: I love seeing different Opinions to mine, no doubts but some of them really shocked me a little (but again fair enough, even if some of them are of course totally WRONG!!/j)

I think people are somewhat missing what this list actually is. In the radio times, it’s listed as “20 years in 20 episodes”. It does say it’s the best and most important episodes from every year + shorunners favorites. So this isn’t strictly a top 20 of all new who. This is about picking one from each year. Besides show runner favorites, this is mostly just a walk down memory lane of show-changing or impactful stories. I don’t think they’re necessarily the best of each year but the picks for what a radio times audience might remember most.

Most of them are decent choices, but Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat’s picks are questionable IMO. They both have better stories in their eras than Gridlock and The Time Of Angels. The list in the Radio Times picks one story for every year of the 20 years the revival has been on screen, so for 2007 I think either Blink or Utopia would have been a better choice, and for 2010 I’d have gone with A Christmas Carol. The latter I’m surprised Steven Moffat didn’t choose as it’s textbook Moffat with the timey wimpy approach to A Christmas Carol.

I agree with 5 of these, especially Moffat and RTD’s entries.

Glad Gridlock is here, as in my opinion, it’s so good for numerous reasons I won’t list here. Time of Angels may as well have been my childhood teddy bear to cuddle on a night.

Would’ve liked to see Death in Heaven included in the list, but Dark Water will do.

I don’t think any stories from RTD2 are worthy of the list just yet, hoping season 2 episodes are better, as I think while Boom was interesting, staying in one set made it feel pretty static imo. And The Star Beast had its problems… With time and ignoring recency bias, I don’t think Boom and TSB would be included in a similar listing in a few years. Then again, I’m optimistic

I think Boom definitely will be. It’s one of Steven Moffat’s best IMO.

I agree with everyone else. This list feels off. Take this for example:

It feels like a strange choice. It is a pretty mid episode.
