PalindromeRose VS The Lost Stories (A Thread)

Greetings everyone,

Today - September 4th - just so happens to be my 23rd Birthday :confetti_ball: :birthday:

Wanting to mark the occasion, I thought it would be a neat idea to make a thread dedicated to my journey through the ‘Lost Stories’.

Would love to know your thoughts on these adventures as we go through the range. Be mindful that my reviews DO CONTAIN SPOILERS.

If you enjoy reading these reviews, do feel free to drop them a like - I’m working towards those illustrious reviewer badges.

This thread was inspired by @MrColdStream Whoniverse Review Corner, which you should absolutely check out. His reviews are marvellous!

#1.01. The Nightmare Fair

Kicking things off with something of a mixed bag, though David Bailie is absolutely magnificent as the Toymaker.

Honestly, it’s criminal he only played the role for two stories.

That reminds me, I must give ‘Solitaire’ a listen.

Wow, thanks for the shout-out. You didn’t have to, but it’s much appreciated :smiling_face:

As for this thread, this should prove to be interesting! I’ll start my day at work today with a cuppa and your Nightmare Fair review!

I honestly never had a problem with this version of the character

I don’t know if I’ve ever revealed this on the forum, but I agree with this. I’ve never understood the prevalent opinion that Six was horribly unlikeable and smug on TV. Sure, he could be a bit pompous and rude at times, but rarely more so than in other incarnations, such as the other Baker.

As for the most recent performer… there are only so many times you can hear Patrick Harris chanting “Und now everybody loves the balls!” before wanting to chuck a brick through your television!

This made me chuckle! Well said

Jamie Robertson transports us back to the mid 1980s by ramming a load of harsh synthesisers into his score.

I usually don’t note the music in BF stories. Still, I noticed this one because it was very clearly trying to evoke that 1980s Radiophonic Orchestra feel, and I believe it was largely successful at that.

Overall, I’m perhaps a bit more positive about the story than you are, but reading your review made me realise that this is a story with strong performances but no real plot and pretty weak worldbuilding.

Great review, thanks for sharing!

(I really look forward to reading the next one, our darling Mission to Magnus…)

Hey, happy birthday.

Big fan of your reviews so I might listen to a few lost stories so I can follow along with this, the first season is free on apple music after all.

Happy birthday (all the best people were born this week  )

The Lost Stories range has always been one of my favourites and fascinates me in how variable it’s quality is (and also how far BF with stretch the definition of ‘lost’…)

Grass is green

The sky is blue

Water is wet

And ‘Mission to Magnus’ is excrement

These are universal truths

Ye olde medieval village… now with added laser crossbows and terrifying robots modelled on demonic figures!

Feel free to let me know what you think of this episode - or my review - below. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks! It usually takes me a few days to get a review written because I tend to go on tangents, but these ‘Lost Stories’ have been a blast to go through.

That being said, I still need to finish my ‘Paradise 5’ review

And I shall look forward to reading it!

I really enjoyed Leviathan but I’ve not listened to it for years. Glad to see it getting a good rating from you - I know how tough and audience you are

Thanks, Delta!

And I will remain true to form when I upload my review of ‘The Hollows of Time’ tomorrow.

Oh boy, it’s a doozy!

There’s a discussion going on in another forum I lurk around about which of the Lost Story audios would be good candidates for animation (allowing for the fact that many of these adaptations have been skewed for audio in terms of visuals being described (sometimes a bit too much maybe).

I wondered what we thought about this. I would 100% love an animated version of The Nightmare Fair which used the same style as the recent Celestial Toymaker animation.

If I had a bazillion Euros/pounds/dollars/some other currency, unlimited time on my hands, and the technical know-how, I’d animate every audio adventure myself! It would be worth it if that would help more people discover the audio!

But animating the Lost Stories sounds like a great idea. It would be interesting to see how some of the more interesting elements of these stories were brought to life onscreen.
