Wait… they’ve changed the file names if you download an audio from the site.
So before it would be something like:
dwmr090-year-of-the-pig.ab1
But - using said adventure as a test - I click the download link and it says
978-1-78575-268-1
Cause that’s helpful!
OK, so I only ever download the audiobook files because I listen to the stories through VLC Media Player.
Why have they removed the option to download either the audiobook of the MP3 files? You have to download both in a package together???
Anyway, here’s what the ZIP for the ‘Year of the Pig’ download looks like. It also comes with ‘Return of the Daleks’ for some reason, despite the fact I purchased it separately.
Not being funny, but what the hell are people with limited broadband meant to do? Unless you’ve got like BT Infinity - or the equivalent with other providers - it’s gonna skyrocket you costs.
The old ZIP files for just the audiobook of your average ‘Monthly Range’ story were around 241mb.
Hmm, yeah, trying downloading some of the very few audiobooks that have download buttons, they also have two copies. It looks like one of the two is m4b and the other is mp3. And one of them had a pdf of the script in the Bonus folder…
I can see where having more things to download could be better, but you really should be able to choose to just download one format.
That’s actually ridiculous… I only really use the app but over 1gb for a generic MR episode seems excessive.
As for missing releases, I’m a download only person and I can’t remember what my exact number of releases was before The Update other than ‘a lot’ so guess I’m never going to know if I’m missing anything ¯_ (ツ)_/¯
I really cannot begin to say how much I miss sorting by range I hope that’s one of the first things they reimpliment. I also feel really bad for the people working on the site and app right now, this must be a horrid position to be in, seeing everyone hate it
You’ll have order numbers from when you purchased them - I have collated mine just in case.
… and winced a little at how much I’ve spent on Big Finish as I was going through them! But it’s been over time and I’ve enjoyed so many of the releases, it’s just seeing it all in one go made my eyes water a bit!
Since I haven’t got that much stuff yet, I can tell precisely what is missing from mine, it seems to be newer purchases only. Since they said stuff from the last few days might not be moved over I imagine that just extended to last few months instead. Luckily I backed up a lot(but possibly not all since my laptop is odd with downloads sometimes) of my stuff
It includes stuff like filtering by category, previous/next release buttons (which was a real problem for me when navigating), and sorting your download library. All stuff which was there in the old website, but it’s good to see them actively taking on feedback and being open about their roadmap.
I know this has been said before & probably not much help now but I would recommend downloaded your purchases from the website & saving them on an external hard drive or cloud storage.
Im not sure if this has been mentioned yet but if you own a main range that had a subscriber release or a subsscriber short trip even if you didnt have a subscription you can downlaod them.
For example, Army of Death now gives everyone Lant Land (a short trip) and the Five Companions (a subsscriber release).
I’m very frustrated with this new website as I can’t even access my account. After my phone was stolen last month I lost access to an email address I used for a decade and I had changed it to my current one on the old website and I have received emails to it, however the new website does not recognise this changed email so I’m unable to access my account at all. Am emailing Big Finish but this is extremely annoying and an unnecessary extra stress to my life right now.
One annoyance I’ve just discovered. With most websites, when you’ve got multiple pages of results, will often add the page number in the URL. This then allows a savy user to simply replace “page=2” with “page=50”. It’s super convenient, especially if you have multiple pages of results and aren’t able to finish in one sitting. Looking at “https://www.bigfinish.com/account/dashboard” where it lists all my purchased stories (and where I currently have 93 pages), when I moved to page 2, there was no URL change. Which means, short of searching for each individual title, I will have to click through multiple pages every time just to see what I have.
Something to consider if you still have access to the old app. Use the purchased list on the old app to discover what you’re missing.
UPDATE: Using this to create a document of everything I’ve got and it’s a task. The Companion Chronicles are the worst because the app lists “Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles…” and if I tap it to get more information, when I go back to the list, it sticks me back at the top and I have to scroll quite a ways to find my place.
I did exactly the same - took a load of screenshots from the old app, counted it all up and then compared that to what the new BF website said I had. That gave me a fair idea of how many I was missing.
I did also discover that everything I was missing was my most recent purchases, going back three or four months. So, if people are missing items, it’s probably worth checking your most recent purchases first. It might save people checking through hundreds of items.
