I honestly feel sorry for the web developers working on the Big Finish site because as @fingersmash says, itās like they are being forced to go live earlier than they should have.
(Yes I am a web developer so I have sympathy here!)
Also, it makes me feel a bit better about my little site sometimes having moments where things arenāt going right⦠Iām just one guy, they have a whole team and managed to make a mess of it.
To avoid people getting the shock of losing purchases they really shouldnāt have gone live until it was all copied across. That was a bad PR move and probably created tonnes of work for the team working on support.
This is good to know, because I was planning to only do dark mode on my site when I update it, as itās easier to only have to work on one, and that seems the most popular. Iāll switch again to doing both
So I seemed to logged in now. But itās horribly slow and sluggish.
So, now that Iām able to access my account, it seems that, unless you previously downloaded it and have a copy somewhere, The Four Doctors isnāt even available to download anymore.
For people worried about losing purchases: I think a lot of problems have arisen because syncing from the old site to the new caused a lot of problems with the CD and download options on specific releases.
For example, I was trying to download the Fourth Doctorās box set of Lost Stories, and couldnāt: thatās because the site only recognises it as a CD release, with no download option. In reality, the CDs sold out a while ago, and even though I bought the download a few months back, I canāt access it for that reason. Other, download-only releases, like Broken Hearts from the 11DCs and a whole bunch of Short Trips, donāt seem to exist anywhere on the new site yet. Thatās one of those syncing issues which (hopefully) should get cleared up as soon as possible.
Personally, Iām not that worried about losing releases: the Big Finish support staff are well known for being very helpful, so if you do think youāve lost something, a few emails should sort it out. The problem comes when youāve acquired a massive BF library which might take some time to sort through and check.)
Interesting little things. I canāt seem to find āEighth Doctor Time War Uncharted 1ā anywhere on the new site. Itās not in the Eight Doctor collection and a search gives no results (even though it comes up as an autofill suggestion when I type āunchartedā in the website search bar.
Theyāre still migrating over all the releases. Honestly I think they should have more down time so the site went up in a finished state. Like it would be annoying but at least it would cause less confusion.
I take a laid-back approach to this. Itāll be fine. Give them time to smooth things out. We are so impatient and require perfection with everything these days. Imagine if we did the same to @shauny and all the small changes and improvements that weāre hoping heāll add at some point. It wouldnāt be very nice!
I find the new site easier to navigate. The old one had too many menus, and you always had to click here and there to find what you were looking for. And the search was horrible - you had to enter exact search terms to find a release. The app is missing some nice features, as noted above, but Iām sure theyāre updating it regularly during the next few months.
I imagine it is because Benny and Charley are both BF āoriginalsā, rather than audios spun off from the TV series. Graceless, Iris and Vienna fall into the same category. The Worlds of Doctor Who all feature characters who first appeared on TV (with the exception of Doomās Day but that originated with the BBC).
Yeah thatās another issue⦠upon a bunch of others.
If you tap on Settings in the app, everything will basically reset allowing you to use the search again. Iām really starting to believe you that this rollout was rushed out to release today⦠which is really disappointing.
Iām really disliking not being able to sort by collection, itās making my app feel really chaotic, and even when Iāve been trying to search for the Main Range for instance, it d been struggling. I have hope theyāll improve it over the coming weeks but until then Iām happy the old app didnāt get instantly obliterated
Had to reset my password, as the one my browser remembered didnāt work.
Viewing my library now shows five items per page, no options to show more. Of course, visiting there is rather pointless anyways, as 3/4ās of the entries say āPlease note: This release is unavailable for download.ā
Honestly, it feels like the sort of thing youād see if one company bought another, and decided to redo all their stuff from scratch. (RIP ComiXologyā¦)
Okay i swear im not crazy but The light at the end was available to download for free a few hours ago. Thought i would come back later to see if itās still there but it seems they fixed it. It was specifically the vinyl version that suddenly had a free download. Kinda bummed i didnāt get it but they wouldāve removed it from my account anyway.
Thanks, @shauny . As a former developer with very light-sensitive eyes, I always switched to dark mode until a few years ago. My eyesight had worsened, and dark mode was just not viable for me anymore. I guess itās because of the contrast or something like that.
To also add something on-topic: Sympathy for the devs and QA people (if any) working on the update. The likelihood of management being too impatient is very high, indeed.
Marketing-wise, itās really not a good thing. I thought about becoming a direct customer (until now I got Big Finish products only via Amazon and was not able to get everything). Now I will wait; there are enough other things to spend money on.
Thereās a whole new app now. It has a black background instead of blue. The old app should still work if youāve downloaded any audios, but you canāt download new ones. So if you havenāt downloaded any of your audios, you have to get the new app from the App/Play Store to access them.
So Iāve finally logged into the BigFinish site. Definitely missing stuff since my old download library was over 1000 items and now itās 918. But like is there no way to order the downloads by range or earliest release?
Like thereās 184 pages worth of audios I need to check through. Would be nice to sort them by range at least. Especially since Iāve got till August 5th to complile a list of those missing.
This is where I think the main issue is. Like Iāve got near enough 1,000 releases Iām gonna have to check through using one of the least intuitive website UIs.
It would be alright if I could sort it by range - cause then I could go in the order of my CDs and sort it that way.
I feel really bad for the people who only buy the downloads right now.
