Dm @shauny your google email and then he can add you
For why? If anything it was inoffensive and I quite enjoyed seeing the story from the Sycorax point of view, especially their end.
Yes, I also don’t see the problem with it. I mean, it’s just The Christmas Invasion all over again, but from the Sycorax POV. I like seeing Doctor Who stories from the monsters’ perspective.
No Fun at the Fair. A standard runaround with the Doctor and Rose and a lone Slitheen. Not much to say about it. 5/10.
Taking Mickey. Quite fun, rare solo outing for Mickey, allowing him to be a bit clever for once. I like the twist on the aliens. 6/10.
Needle Point. I’m reall starting to sense a pattern with these stories where the Doctor goes off on his own, leaving the companion to take care of the problem at hand. This is another one of those, with some bizarre old lady aliens. 5/10.
The reason for that is that a lot of these were published in separate books focussed on one character - they had lots of info about the character and then ended with a story about them.
I summed it up in my review
But to repost it here
I want to love the Sycorax, they deserve a great story at some point. This isn’t it. The repetition of of ‘Sycorax rock’ just feels silly, the whole tone feels off. Like I do get that this is for kids, but even then this feels strange. It doesn’t match the vibe we get shown of the sycorax in The Christmas Invasion, at least for me, like there’s some of it there but not at all to this extent.
And again, the framing device doesn’t work at all, it’s meant to be a ship’s log, and it works fine as that at the start, but eventually it’s recounting the events of The Christmas Invasion as they’re happening, so is he writing the log while the events happen?
It just doesn’t work for me.
So, three more stories down. Taking a break from this now because they are a bit too similar to each other, and I’m not feeling this collection right now. Also, I want to read those 9th Doc comics!
A Dog’s Life. Funny how this is another story where JayPea and I are polar opposites. I found the writing style of this one incredibly distracting, and it got in the way of a potentially good story. 2/10.
The Secret of the Stones. My biggest problem with this one is that the Doctor is reduced to a joke machine. 5/10.
The Planet That Wept. This one has a great basic premise and an interesting setting that should have been explored in a novel! That’s the only reason I don’t rate it higher, but it’s still one of the stronger stories so far. 7/10.
Jonathan Morris summed up my thoughts on this story very well in the 2007 Chronicles bookazine.
Richard’s story is rather inconsequential; it can be summarised as “the Doctor and Martha arrive on a planet for a holiday, discover it’s dangerous, and leave.”
This here should have been the synopsis for The Web Planet:
“The Doctor and his companions arrive on a planet by mistake, discover it’s filled with ants, and leave.”
Really enjoyed Disappearing Act - fun little story and utterly loved the image of Donna flouncing through a cabaret club and eating someone else’s food!
Started this again. Read three stories that were 2.5-3/5. But they are short. Will continue tomorrow. Need that badge.
I really liked A Dog’s Life. It was fun and heartbreaking, So sad when he wakes up in a box
Absolute highlight of the set!
I read two stories last night. I really liked the one where the TARDIS is taking snapshots of Stonehenge. It was fun and clever
I also read the one about the rain with feelings. It was fine…
@MrColdStream You were very harsh on this story in your review. I think that i agree with most of it but I thought that it was fun.
Yes, I didn’t vibe with it. Don’t remember much of it anymore :D
Most of the stories in this collection aren’t particualrly good but there are a few nice ones towards the end.
