Heroes and Monsters Collection

No Fun at the Fair - just like Stamp of Approval, this felt like a DWA comic strip in prose form. Quite liked the concept of the Slitheen going around playing the fairground games after hours just so they could report back to Slitheen HQ and turn the games into grotesque versions with human heads and the like.

I’m between books atm, so I decided to delve into this collection and read some of the stories before moving on to my next book.

Looking back at my notes from 2016 when I read this book, I quite liked the first story, which I guess was The Stranger. And that was all I really liked in the collection. It seems I thought some of the other stories were okay, but was pretty unimpressed overall.

Not as unimpressed as I was last year when I picked up The Doctor Who Stories, a 15-story collection, 14 of which were later included Heroes and Monsters. Makes me wonder why “Speech Day” was left out of H&M, but clearly I didn’t need to get The Stories when I already had the other book.

Read Taking Mickey (felt like an SJA episode), Needlepoint (that was fun actually), A Dog’s Life (lovely piece but I’m sure there’s another short story that does something similar with K9) and The Secret of the Stones (good gag). I think I’m finally up to ones I haven’t read before now.

I’ve read three stories so far.

The Stranger was a great start. A little Time War story that isn’t trying to be timey-wimey or epic, but delves into the importance of hope and resilience. 7/10.

The Hero Factor is a bit too silly for my taste. Rose is unnecessary and Ten is a quip machine and the solution is stupid. 4/10.

Mission to Galacton gives us some Dalek action. It’s a fun to see them utterly fail at invading yet another planet, before the sinister conclusion. But it’s not the most memorable of stories. 6/10.

Stamp of Approval, a brief, forgettable, and a bit weird murder mystery with sentient stamps of Queen Victoria. 5/10.

The Final Darkness, a retelling of The Christmas Invasion through the Sycorax’s ship logs. Really not much more than that. 6/10.

Surprised you lot are taking so long to read this.

I did it in one go.

Although maybe you all have better things to do…

I am not as fast of a reader as you. Also I found it a bit boring and needed a break after some stories. Will continue someday :grinning:

The stories are very short, so I could probably finish this one very quickly if I wanted to. However, I’ve been reading this one just a few stories at a time when I’ve had some time to spare. Also porbably going to have a longer break at some point to read another novel.

And you seem to be a very fast reader, anyway. My reading speed is somehwere in the middle, but a little slower in English than in Swedish/Finnish (also depending on the writing style; these are quite easy to read).

I like to think I am, but Eden Rebellion is taking me oh so long to work through…

To be fair, it’s quite a dull book…

I want to enjoy it, but it’s just failing to capture my interest.

I need to finish it to 100% Fifteen and Ruby though…

Yeah, it is the worst of Fifteens New series novels.

I’m surprised people are as positive on The Final Darkness as they are, I honestly hated it

While I don’t hate the story, it just felt like one of those articles from the modern DW annuals that are just retellings of episodes told in the first person.

Nothing special for me.

(Speaking of annuals, @shauny, I need to rate all those comics and short stories…)

If you have access to the spreadsheet add the stories to a page there and tell him when you are done.

I don’t think I have access to it
