But is that “recurring” and “continuous”? Are we counting the number of episodes, the time spent in the TARDIS, the number of separate trips made, or something else? We need to find a consistent definition!
Yes! This is important dagnabbit!
No shilly-shallying!
I shall not eat, I shall not sleep until that single paragraph definition of what makes a companion is made and there isn’t a single voice in the entire fandom that has a single complaint to make!
Recurring. She has travelled many times in thr TARDIS, both with and without the Doctor! She can drive it!
Continuous. She’s been in loads of stories, including back-to-back episodes, with the Eleventh Doctor. She’s met every other Doctor on audio.
Definition of Companion:
noun
One who accompanies or is in company with another for a longer or shorter period, either from choice or casually; one who is much in the company of, or is associated with, another or others; an associate; a comrade; a consort; a partner.
She’s the Doctor’s partner in more ways than one that’s for sure! I really like River (except everything with her “Mels” incarnation which felt like a weird add-on).
But she is a very special case. You can’t really define her “tenure” as a companion, like “Ryan is a companion in series 11 and 12”.
And I really prefer to not have EU stories where River meets Doctors other than 11 as I kind of think it “dilutes” the emotional impact of their televised relationship from the Library to Darillium. (Plus, for me, it requires far too many loopholes and memory shenanigans with the Doctor to have River meet the Doctor pre-library)
Alex Kingston is great in the audios I have heard with her and there are some great stories, but it’s like Peri where I prefer to not think of her as having travelled as long with 5 as the audios indicate (though I love Erimem) because it takes away from the emotional impact of the regeneration in The Caves of Androzani in my eyes.
That’s just the “canon” I have in my head
To quote a wise, certain Seventh Doctor story-loving forum member: “You clearly hate fun!”
Anyway, if a companion is someone who is recurring and continuous, Katarina and Adam wouldn’t fit because they barely made one trip in the TARDIS. Whereas, if you count them (and Bret), then you should count Mickey too, because he made more trips in the TARDIS than the other three combined.
Ahh, this is one of those areas of fandom with no right or wrong answers, and everyone defines a companion differently. Though I am the only one who is correct of coure
