Much as I love Douglas Adams, one thing I will say is that his style isn’t quite as unique as people tend to think. He’s actually pretty successfully taken PG Wodehouse’s writing style and applied it to sci-fi.
Reading books of PG Wodehouse’s short stories, I couldn’t help but notice that a lot of his clever turns of phrase were similar, and I recall running into at least one or two that Douglas Adams just used pretty much word for word.
Mind you, Douglas Adams actually wrote the opening to a PG Wodehouse collection. Not really something he’s hiding.
(It’s also rather noticeable that Douglas Adams liked recycling content. City of Death and Shada are very recognizable in Dirk Gently’s Detective Agency.)
I do recommend Douglas Adams “Last Chance To See”, btw…
I’m not familiar with Woodhouse’s work and didn’t know that Adams emulated him in his work. Interesting - but then again, that’s sort of what writers do. They draw inspiration from those who come before them.
Well, you can’t claim he’s not at least a tiny bit brilliant. Without RTD, we might not have had Doctor Who back on our screens.
But that’s nothing against building the greatest Doctor Who webiste ever, of course. Even if the website wouldn’t exist without the brilliant mind of RTD…
Okay a teeeensy bit of brilliant in there
(But paired with a mouth that doesn’t know when to stop talking, and a complete and utter misapprehension of what an anagram is )
Children of Earth was definitely bloomin’ brilliant
