Couldn’t find if this was already a topic but I wanted some recommendations for good arcs in the Main Range, as it was often organised into many different plot threads and through lines.
Lets get the obvious ones out of the way:
Eight and Charley is classic
Six and Evelyn is a great showcase of character
Seven, Ace and Hex is probably some of the best Doctor Who material out there.
So if it’s just a trilogy or a huge litany of interconnected adventures, what are some of the best arcs in the Monthly Adventures?
The Six/Evelyn arc dovetailing with the Seven/Ace/Hex arc will always be a classic. I’m relistening to it at the moment and it’s wonderful. But my vote for the best MR arc is probably the Klein arc—Colditz, and the first Klein trilogy (I haven’t heard the second). Those latter three stories are probably the best Main Range trilogy I’ve heard so far.
The Klein arc (at least up through Daleks Among Us, I haven’t heard Warlock’s Cross)
The Two Masters Trilogy
The Charley/C’rizz/Divergent Universe Arc
The Older Nyssa arc
The Key 2 Time Trilogy
The 6 & Charley arc
The 1963 trilogy and the 7 & Mel trilogy aren’t really arcs but they’re also really good imo. Tbh almost all of the Season 24-set audios are great! Bang-Bang-a-Boom! and Red are my favorites tho
See I think the second one is better lol. A Thousand Tiny Wings is the only story of the first trilogy that I think is better than any of the audios with Will, all three of which I really love although Persuasion is probably my favorite.
Idk what to tell you lol, he doesn’t annoy me, I like him. But also the stories are so good that I don’t think it would matter much to me if he did annoy me.
I’ve not heard the Locum Doctors trilogy yet! I started the first story once but don’t remember how far I got, but I was kinda bored I’m definitely gonna go back and finish it eventually.
Can someone explain what an arc is? I thought it was a dedicated grouping of stories (like Land of Fiction), but some people here are just saying the broad “I like [companion]'s run”.
I think we’re just using it as a catch all term for a ‘connected’ series of releases whether that’s through a companion, a recurring ‘thing’ (like the Forge) or because BF released them as a trio. Doctor Who, as a whole, hasn’t really done arcs - the Key to Time and the modern series penchant for repeating a short phrase across a bunch of episodes.
I use the term “arc” for say the Hex audios because they do build to a cresendo, first in A Death in the Family, then again in Gods and Monsters and finally in Signs and Wonders. Not every Hex story is a proper part of the arc (see A Death in the Family - prerequisites for the arc entries/prerequisites for A Death in the Family), but rather than list out the actual arc entries every time, it’s easier to just say “the Hex arc”. Make sense?
You two basically have what I’m thinking in mind. I agree with the connected stories part, but the companion one is still iffy to me (mainly in terms of companions who don’t have any real “drama” to them, or painting a broad timeline like “[Doctor] and [companion]”). To me, an arc feels like it should be a specific group of stories, so some of the responses in this thread have me confused haha.
