EU Canon Appreciation Thread

I keep calling her Hebe in my head and then being like oh no she’s not, have to think of them as related to keep sane. (not keep sane another turn of phrase, just can’t think of one at the moment)

Oh same it’s super annoying :sob:

Did Hebe live? Maybe she came back as [1] Shirley?

  1. I forgot her name for minutes here, remembered it, reforgot it and then remembered it again while considering rescrolling up the whole time ↩︎

Hebe is alive, don’t worry.

Major spoilers for today’s Doctor Who TV episode

I’m already sick of seeing “Fugitive needs a spin-off!!” as if we don’t already have one :sob:

I really hate ethe phrase ‘there is no canon’.

I believe it’s the complete opposite, ‘everything is canon’.

Every source counts. All media is canon.

I haven’t listened to that much audios, but I completely respect them as extremely vital to the Whoniverse.

There is a canon, and everything is part of it.

Yeah I always direct people to Night of the Doctor as well.

Spoilered some leaks for the current TV season future eps:

I am absolute terrified IF Susan returns they’ll retcon her BF 8 adventures. It’s crucial to 8’s story and doesn’t work with Night of the Doctor. If it is retconned I’ll have to put up with the usual “oh it doesn’t matter tv takes priority blah blah” which just idk irks me.

Because canon doesn’t mean ‘fits in to the same continuity’, it means an official Doctor Who story. If canon = continuity then half the TV episodes even would be ‘not canon’ since they often contradict each other.

To be fair, when I say that, I mean in terms of like ‘there is no set list of what’s canon and what’s not, because everything is canon’ if that makes sense

This is a discussion that’s been had many times before. ‘Canon’ and ‘continuity’ are not the same thing.

It is factually correct to say Doctor Who does not have a canon. There is no official canon. No one person or ‘estate’ has declared what is ‘official’ Doctor Who. So therefore nothing is canon because there isn’t one.

BUT - when this debate rears its head (as it continually does and has done since I became a fan in the Wilderness Years) it is actually a debate about continuity and whether certain contradictory story details can co-exist within the narrative of the show.

To be fair, it’s been doing so long before that, there’s three different Atlantis’, even if you just look at Pre-Baker TV stories

Would just like to remind everyone why this thread was made…

I don’t think there’s any negativity here, we’re maybe a little off topic because we’re discussing what canonicity and continuity means for DW, but it’s still relevant to the thread as a whole

Or indeed the comic strips and annuals which bear almost no resemblance to the TV show.

Specific parts of that initial post from @greyherringgull which were asked to not be brought up have been brought up though. We made this thread for the very reasons outlined there and quite honestly I’m just starting to think is it worth me even sharing my views if I’m gonna constantly get 100’d reacted and responded by the same people who clearly have polar opposite views. I understand that in other threads I’ll always get push back on this type of thing, but I’m disappointed its come in this one.

Ok I apologise for saying what I said on this thread, I was just reading the replies and I replied without thinking about the initial “rules” of the thread.

I’ve deleted my responses.

Its okay but it just feels almost like being ganged up on to get people who don’t even interact or reply to the thread coming in and 100 reacting when I know they share completely opposite views. I wouldn’t have reacted so strongly had it not happened last week already.

I wouldn’t expect anyone would go into the 13th Doctor positivity thread saying #notmydoctor. Yes, what you said is true, do I agree with RTD and it all? Absolutely not.

I hope you can see where we are coming from, as quite a few of us in this thread are autistic and all have a shared mindset with regards to the EU. Heck, we all even have slightly different from each other I’m not super fussed on books as an example.

My apologies for joining in on the 100s. Didn’t mean any harm

I mean, this came from someone saying that they

And as far as I can tell most people were agreeing with that, at least in spirit, talking about the differences between ‘no canon’ and ‘no continuity’, and talking about how we love the fact that every story is/can be ‘canon’ even if there’s contradictions (admittedly with the exception of @shauny’s initial query about contradictions, though even that was a question rather than statement disagreeing, and the follow up read (at least to me) like a genuine question wanting to know others perspectives)

Also the only 100 react from someone who’s not interacted with this thread otherwise was @BSCTDrayden agreeing with posts about how it’s great that things can work even if they contradict (including to @greyherringgull’s post about how canon doesn’t mean fits into the same continuity)
