EU Canon Appreciation Thread

Sorry I’m not quite sure what you mean here.

No there’s a couple others who also did the same last week and it very much felt like a ganging up targeted thing which I know it wasn’t but to get a group of friends all doing the same reaction invalidating my views, didn’t make me feel good. I hope you can understand that from my POV. I love this place I really do and I’m glad I can bring that up now, because that made me extremely uncomfortable last week.

Was meant to include the quote below it, the full phrase being “this came from someone who hates the phrase ‘there is no canon’”

Ah right, that’s fair, can’t speak for last week because I wasn’t there then, was just referring to the events of today

To put stuff a little more on track I like whenever Big Finish reference their own past adventures; like how Here Lies Drax is explicitly a sequel to The Problem with Drax

I need to do more Drax stories I’ve only done the one with Alfie from EastEnders Shane Ritchie’s Drax and thought it was really amazing :sob: So funny!

Highly recommend 4DA The Problem with Drax! The Shane Ritchie one actually references it constantly, though goes to show how good that one is that it works so well standalone and just has extra layers if you know Problem with Drax

I am looking for a new range to delve into… :eyes: I’m just about caught up with the audio club MR stuff so maybe 4DA’s are next!

4DA wise I’ve done half the Anya series, the Naomi/Harry series and then the Solo series.

I am sorry, but I find this a strange way of viewing things. I have deliberately not written on this topic because I know that we don’t agree with each other on this, and I felt like it was the wrong place to have this discussion. But if I see a post that I agree with, I will 100 it, and sometimes I don’t even know what topic I am in. This will never be part of a targeted attack or something; it just means that I agree with the post. I think that must be okay.

I feel like its perfectly rational, but feel free to disagree. The thread was made so we can avoid repeating disagreements we’ve had elsewhere, so really its not a place I’d expect certain people to crop up. So for a message to be reacted the same way by a group of people who I know all share the same-ish views on the topic, it felt very overwhelming at the time. I didn’t want to speak out and cause a scene then, but here we are.

If it had been in another thread, it would’ve been a slightly different story.

Wait hang on, how can we talk about EU canon appreciation without mentioning the master that is James Goss?!

Ignoring the multitude of TW Main range stories it also references, The Torchwood Archive references Ghost Train (a Torchwood Tale), and Golden Age (a BBC Radio 4 TW drama).

He also snuck a reference to Mavity into a Torchwood story that released a full month before Wild Blue Yonder

The mavity reference was such a great nod. I love Goss, think he’s a great writer and an all round nice person from what I’ve heard. The TW references you mentioned just show how much love he has for TW.

(To be fair, those are two other TW stories he wrote, but still)

I keep thinking about that Eight story from Twelve Doctors of Christmas whenever people bring up Susan.[1]

Also, to weigh in on Torchwood, the Lucky Day ep felt a lot like a Series 6 Torchwood story to me. I think people can guess which one. The Man Who Destroyed Torchwood.

Actually, the Lethbridge Stewart estate have declared an official canon for Doctor Who: https://www.lethbridge-stewart.co.uk/timeline/ (Page might be broken, it’s supposed to look like the rest of the site)

I remember thaf 13 also has a similar story. I was so annoyed when reading it in the same way that two versions of Human Nature make my head hurt

The Mavity thing was a request from my understanding. (Sidenote, I hate that joke, props to the EU writer who made Gevity instead and the rest of that fix, far funnier. Also, hate is blurred because this is for positivity, although is main show negativity disallowed? I don’t know.)

Also, Torchwood Archive was nice, hope they do a sequel. I remember Tim Foley does a rather good job with references, although might be misremembering.

They can declare all they like but that isn’t an official canon for Doctor Who. It’s an official canon for their range of books. That isn’t anywhere close to being the same thing.

They do own the Brigadier and The Great Intellegence, apparently too. (If that’s his continuity, it’s funny.) Honestly, the only thing I take as given is At Childhood’s End because that book doesn’t really work if Ace isn’t the One True Ace. It sort of does, but rereading it with Power of The Doctor, let alone The Red List, in mind might just make Ace’s timeline a little (massive underexaggeration) more confusing than it was.

Yes, the absolutely own the rights to the Brig and the Great Intelligence but that doesn’t in any way, shape or form give them any authority in declaring a canon beyond their own range. Partly it was brought about, I believe, because they had set up a family history for the Brig which was then royally ■■■■■■ up by Twice Upon a Time.

There are lots of spin offs where the publishers own the rights - BBV, for example, had the Zygons, Krynoids, Sontarans, the Rani for a while. Cutaway Comics have Paradise Towers, Omega, Lytton and the Tharils.

It completely was. (this was long long after that though, just last year it was added) I agree. However, I find the gall of them making one so funny that I like including it in discussions. (Especially because it means that there are Brig stories that happened that he hasn’t experienced in his own linear universe continuity. Like Flux, happened to The Doctor and the Brig but he will not retain info about it (until the site is updated again). Honestly that works with the text of Flux unintentionally; definitely not just an admin error or because the site hasn’t been updated since Tennant.)

So many “We need a Fugitive spin-off” comments everywhere today and I’m just like… Doctor Who fans really are lucky we get BF, a lot of fandoms would kill for the amount of content we get from BF!
