Episode Discussion: The Well

I deleted Twitter when Musk did the Nazi salute. It is so nice to get off that awful place.

And that’s why you have us - cats, milk, thinly-veiled death threats and never staying on topic if we can help it…

Quite right too (you deleting, NOT the salute). Whilst there have always been awful people on there (and other platforms), it was possible to engage with some wonderfully positive stuff as well. Indeed, the awfuls were often kept at bay or more limited in their awfulness. Today, nah. Not for me. I don’t need that social effluent in my life. Dirty, nasty, filthy cesspool run by nasty, selfish, bigoted billionaires and seething with the roiling masses of intolerance. Not for me.

What’s the point of staying on topic when you can… oooh, look at that? Now, what were we saying?

You’re all expressing such taxonomic bias.
“Mammals this, mammals that.”
“This mammal’s better than that mammal!”
“Dogs. Cats. Blah di blah.”

Will no-one think of the invertebrates?

Now, here’s cute! (Mummy with babies)

I guess a mod should start deleting all posts that discuss episodes of Dr. Who. Let’s start with Delta and the Bannermen.

Erm… I put in the vote for a reptile too  .

My sincerest apologies, @deltaandthebannermen. You’re quite right!

“Vertebrates this, vertebrates that.”
“This vertebrate’s better than that vertebrate!”
“Dogs. Cats. Bearded dragons. Blah di blah.”

But what about the invertebrates, I ask you?

Championing the small and the weird (and the occasionally very very cute)!

See, the Menoptera are real (just smaller than you thought).

Everything comes back to The Web Planet eventually. Everyone should check out my fascinating thread of all things Vortisian:

I’m going to be the sensible adult here and bring this topic back on course (it can’t go more off topic than The Web Planet!). I rewatched The Well and finally finished my review. This is still a 10/10 for me.

The Well is one of the strongest episodes of the RTD2 era so far – a perfect blend of atmosphere, character, mystery, and existential horror. It builds on Midnight without diminishing it, delivering an entirely new kind of fear while still honouring the legacy of the original. With brilliant performances, particularly from Rose Ayling-Ellis, gorgeous production values, and a slow-burn plot that rewards patience, this is modern Doctor Who firing on all cylinders. Creepy, characterful, and completely captivating.

You’re welcome to read my full review below (spoilers):

Blimey that’s a lot of off-topic nonsense  /lh

No, because most of the posts aren’t discussing The Well :sob: /lh

To get it back on topic:

This actually wasn’t in Unleashed but in the YouTube behind the scenes and to be fair RTD does actually talk mention Sharma Walfall, calling her a brilliant writer (someone up thread a million cat posts away, think it was @deltaandthebannermen, said it was bad he didn’t mention her in Unleashed, well he did here), and I think if you listen to it (from 1 minute in) it’s not so much that he couldn’t fit it into the Pantheon (he does say that) but also that he wanted to treat this real religion with some respect and you can’t do that while making them Doctor Who monsters. I agree.

I know we had Satan, but imagine we had Jesus or the Prophet Muhammad as a Doctor Who villain, I don’t think that would go down well.

It was me who said it was bad he didn’t mention her in Unleashed.

I’m glad she got a mention in the behind the scenes video on YouTube but still maintain it’s pretty remiss to not have her namechecked in the Unleashed episode as well.

Edited to add, I’ll also point out I wasn’t throwing any shade on RTD for not mentioning her, just that she did not get mentioned. Which is, again, out of line I think.

Well just do the story without any religious character, no need to shoehorn in Midnight. RTD! shakes fist

I think what happened was she wrote a story about the Nigerian gods, they decided that wouldn’t work, so they wrote a story about a monster in space and then it turned into a Midnight connection accidentally so then they wrote it in.
