Episode Discussion: The War Games in Colour

Just watched it.
Yes it might have benefited from half an hour more, but I think it was a really well done job in editing - much, much better than the Daleks in Colour for me :slightly_smiling_face:

Why is the music so loud??? I like to actually be able to hear dialogue

The gag with UNIT dating was fantastic :slightly_smiling_face:

I am definitely in favour of more “In Colour” if this is the benchmark, though if I am doing a chronological rewatch I think I will go for the original 10-part B&W version

I laughed when they did that

I watched this this morning, with my Mum and Dad, who are both of the age that they actually watched the first, second, and third Doctors’ runs live on TV.

We were all very impressed with the colourisation.

We laughed out loud a lot, sometimes at the absurdity of it, and also at the NuWho gags.

I didn’t actually think the music was too bad compared to The Daleks In Colour and my memory of the 10-part serial isn’t great, having only watched it once years ago, but I couldn’t tell that too much was cut out.

It was great! And the original still exists, for anyone who wants to keep watching that.

I wonder if they will do another one?

Oh and the marketing for this episode was pretty bad, wasn’t it?

There was no banner on iPlayer about it and if I searched for “The War Games” you have to go into the 1963 collection and see it mixed in there.

I thought that was a little disappointing. How are the “not we” supposed to even find it…

Agree with that. Makes me feel like more of these are unlikely. Didn’t feel like the beeb were trying to build an audience for it.

Bear in mind, they weren’t showing it to anyone not in the UK anyways, so not as much advertising needed…

Oh and am I going mad or when the War Chief was killed and his body taken away I could have sworn I heard regeneration energy!?

Maybe a bit too much wine?

In that case I had too much wine as well

It was around 11am, hey you’re allowed wine all day on Christmas Day!!

It used to be a tradition (maybe some places it still is) that with breakfast Christmas morning Danish people had a “Kaffepunch”.

Recipe:
You take a white coffee cup and place a coin in it. Pour black coffee in till you can’t see the coin and then pour snaps (40% clear alcohol) until the coin becomes visible again.

I think you are okay with a bit of wine today

That is true! Cheers! Hope that you are having a great day!

I don’t understand why they rescore these. The original music in both cases is quite good already. I get that with the cuts, the existing soundtrack might not line up as well, but why not just re-edit the existing music?

Speaking as someone who hasn’t watched the original story, can I just say, I really, really liked that!

I had a massive smile during the final scenes, and thought the colourisation was beautiful.

Of course, my opinion may change after having watched the original War Games.

Glad you enjoyed it! I do highly recommend giving the Original a watch, if you already enjoyed yourself with this one, since it does flesh out some bits which were left on the Cutting Room.

Fans in shock as someone has a positive opinion about something!

If you are a fan that will sit through a ten part black and white story from the 60s, I think most will still watch it.

To the uninitiated, that sounds very unhygienic. I’d be at the sink washing the coin multiple times

Overall I enjoyed this additional way to watch The War Games.
It was strange a couple of times when people just appeared/ disappeared.
The colourisation was great but they effectively changed the colour of Jamie’s kilt (leaving out the green and white) and it’s the colour mix that determines the clan! I assume it’s to do with the work involved but it’s culturally insensitive :unamused:

I liked the used of recent Doctors for the regeneration suggestions, but found it a shame that they didn’t mix any classic Doctors in. It was very positive, however, that it meant that The Second Doctor had no issue with what sex he was. It did infer, however, that there is some predetermination in what future regenerations will look like.
I liked the idea of the regeneration scene, but some of the CGI was jarring.
I loved the nod to the UNIT timeline issues.

If they do a third, I wonder what they’ll choose. These first two were relatively easy to guess. Any suggestions on what you think would be a likely third serial; rather than the one you wish they’d do?

I just watched the final ten minutes. The scenes with the Time Lords were cute but nothing on the original.

That being said, I thought the special effects for the regeneration were fantastic, and the UNIT dating joke was hilarious!
