Episode Discussion: The War Games in Colour

My only guesses what will be next are either Tomb or Dalek Invasion. Personally, I would want them to try Web Planet, since that one could be an interesting to tackle, would be also nice of them to tackle a lesser loved one for a change after the rather mostly universally beloved War Games.

Maybe we could get them to animate the Web Planet, even though the episodes are intact?

A Cyberman story does seem the most likely. It’s a shame that the only complete one is Tomb as The Invasion would make for a great story to cut-down and colourise. But, even a cut-down Invasion won’t work without Episode 1.

The only problem I have Tomb is that I think it’d be very white and silver and would be a bit of a waste of the colourisation process.

It’s a shame that it’s “colorise and hack to bits”. The Keys of Marinus might be a good next one for them to colorise otherwise. I hate to think of how rushed it would probably feel after they got through with it, though.

I’d like them to sort out the rights issues with An Unearthly Child and do that one. Probably unlikely though.

I was talking about this with my dad, and he threw out The Moonbase Tomb of the Cybermen as a potential.

I think they should do Rose in black-and-white, and extended to 4x25 minutes! That would be nice to see!

I would not say no to more Rose!

The only problem with The Moonbase is that, as with The Invasion, you have two episodes that are animation. While cutting between live-action and animation might be fine for a DVD release I’m not sure it would it would work for a TV broadcast.

No wait hang on, I’m mixing up The Moonbase and Tomb of the Cybermen!!

I have to say that I also haven’t seen the original black and white yet and I thought the colorized version wasn’t bad at all. I also grinned a bit at the end. Regeneration was well done and I now know why Third Doctor was exiled to Earth (last time I’ve seen the Third Doctor episodes was a long time ago).

Though I don’t really have an opinion on the whole ‘War Chief is the Master’ thing… yet. All I’ve seen is that people aren’t real happy about it ;D I do love The Master as a character though. War Chief seemed kinda cool as his own person and not as a version of The Master. I should watch the original War Games at some point when I start watching Classic Who from the beginning.

Can’t wait for them to cut it to half an hour.

To be fair though, that’s another reason why I think Tomb of the Cybermen works, it’s only 4 parts, there’s not too much to cut down

But then way cut it down at all? Just colorize it and post it in an omnibus format.

Aside from it being very expensive of course. Though I’m hoping they did some of these color techniques to fix the color in S7. Especially Ambassadors.

I think the pacing of some classic stories could definitely be improved, and it costs more to colourise 2 hours than an hour and a half

There’s a world of difference between some edits for time and the pacing to more align with the tastes of the modern viewer (I’m reluctant to say “improve” since there’s usually nothing wrong with the pacing, just time and standards have moved on) and cutting 60% or more of a story out. I think one is reasonable, the other excessive.

yee 100% agree with you on this

I can understand why The Daleks and The War Games were the first stories they wanted to do this with, but I’d rather they cut down a 4 parter for the next story

I personally usually prefer the pace of classic who, and think it was about right when it was 4 episodes per serial, occasionally 6. So, yeah, definitely not an improvement in my eyes, and I’d rather they just colorised the whole thing.
