Episode Discussion: Lux

Thought that this was a clever post from DW on Insta.

Yay the new episode was so great! I love all that storyline around gods!

I really enjoyed it. I know fans are uneasy about the future of the show, and naturally may read too much into it, but I really think Flood’s comments are just building up the two-part finale. May 24th is the date the first part is airing, the second on the 31st.

Of RTD’s pantheon arc, I think Lux is probably the one that works the best for me. Part of it is that it’s an original creation, rather than a retcon of an existing thing like the Toymaker (more excusable, since the Toymaker may as well have been a god already) and Sutekh (don’t like that one, Sutekh wasn’t a god, just extremely powerful, to the point he and the Osirans were believed to be them, not to mention I think they really butchered him in Legend/Empire). Maestro I think had more potential, but wasn’t realized because it needed writing with a better understanding of music, music theory, etc. Lux, on the other hand, just a more simple concept, the god of light, light makes sense, movies being a good way to utilize that. Alan Cumming was great as the character, just the perfect amount of camp.

The effects I thought were really cool, they did a great job incorporating the 2-dimentional being into a 3-dimensional world, and when he went 3-D, it was horrifying and effective. I know Doctor Who isn’t the first to do this, but they did it well. Also liked the bits with the animated Doctor and Belinda.

The controversial point is that I even enjoyed the fans scene. It both provided a nice message about how important the fans are to the show and vice-versa, as well as highlighting some of the ways we aren’t perfect. We as fans can be annoying sometimes, and I especially liked how the leakers got particularly called out. Maybe the fact that they all said Blink was their favorite is a little outdated, but there was a time where that was a very common favorite episode, and there are episodes that fans obsess over, Blink I think being acceptable to use as an example for that (and probably RTD just taking the piss out of his friend Steven Moffat). Really, the fans scene here I thought felt a lot less condescending than Whizz Kid in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. I think some fans don’t like being called out, even if it’s just subconscious, but I honestly don’t think the scene did anything wrong, or distasteful towards the fans.

I don’t want to rate this on just one viewing, but I’m thinking somewhere in the 8-9/10 range may be where this settles.

I seem to be pretty contradictory to what most people here are saying; I liked the fans but disliked the animation aspects.

Also, I can’t believe no one mentioned From Out of the Rain yet!

Okay, great episode. Funny thing is that I was getting Greatest Show in the Galaxy vibes from the beginning, and they didn’t quite stop, as the meta level was similar…

New theory: Mrs. Flood is a BBC exec.

Maybe she works for Disney and she’s here to cancel the show

And no, RTD, having the Doctor talk about his planet being destroyed does not make him 3-dimensional…

Yes. That’s a good point. If they wanted to make a point about depth of character, they didn’t do enough there.

Just finished Lux. My favorite from RTD2 and that’s saying something cause I’ve been enjoying the era.

Oh. That’s high praise.

I think that it is one of my favourites as well. I still think that WBY is before it but it was great.

I get why someone can get annoyed by the going three-dimensional scene, but it’s not that serious. Which may feel like I’m waving away valid criticism, but honestly I think it’s a clever play with words that fits the cartoony tone. I’d be annoyed if there wasn’t any character work worth talking about this episode, but Belinda’s relationship with the Doctor got some wonderful layers in this one.

Super excited for the rest of season.

Personally, my problem with it isn’t the pun but that it’s not actually any meaningful character work. Belinda acts out of character and the Doctor says something he’s said a million times before as if it’s new and groundbreaking.

I enjoyed this one. I wouldn’t call it a favorite, and it probably won’t be one I rewatch much, but it was good. Ring-a-ding was a decent villain. Though I didn’t like his 3-D form at all. At first I thought Mr. Pye was played by John Leeson, but I see that’s not the case. A good episode, and I’m looking forward to next week.

There is a comedy tone to scene for me - the Doctor is being overdramatic for the sake of it - that tells me this time around the production team is conscious of how they have been overplaying it; which doesn’t take away from the fact Belinda is seeing a side of the Doctor she hadn’t before.

It’s Belinda’s second episode, I don’t think we have gone far enough to establish that anything that happened here was out of character. In fact, I think the opposite. If she kept the exactly same behaviour she had last episode even in a completely different setting, that would stand out as one-note for me. She still wants to go home, but she got to see the Doctor in a less alien light - and now she understands him a lil bit more. It was strong character work for me.

What a start to this season! The Robot Revolution was oodles of fun, with some fantastic set pieces. However, Lux was extraordinary. Loved it! Loved the meta. Loved that Mr Ring-A-Ding AKA Lux was actually really rather creepy throughout and grotesque as he attained his ā€˜real’ body. So fresh, so new and yet… there was something utterly classic era about him.

I know opinions on the ā€˜fans’ scene are mixed but I unreservedly loved that scene (and the three of them). Affectionate, sorta sweet, tongue in cheek and so so true in many respects. They don’t represent all of fandom but they do highlight certain traits that I’m sure we can all recognise.

Oh, and did I say? I LOVED this episode!

Lux shone bright for me. ā€œBeamin’ atcha!ā€ Yes indeed. Radiant and yet, just as light should, it cast atmospheric shadows.

Next week? Looks like it’s time for something completely different. And I, for one, cannot wait (though, I’m going to have to)!

This season has started off so strong, next week looks incredible too. I’ve also really liked both directors we’ve had so far, granted one is a returning director.

Honestly a massive step up from the first two episodes of last season

I liked Space Babies but both these episodes have been miles better.
