Episode Discussion: Lux

I like Space Babies better than The Robot Revolution but I know that belongs in the controversial thread. Lux was much better executed than Devil’s Chord tho.

I really enjoyed The Devil’s Chord, but yeah Space Babies not as much. Also idk it just feels they’ve found their footing way more. I was taking a look, and I rated 2-7 really high last season, just the premiere and final part I didn’t rate high.

Am I the only one who absolutely loved that meta moment?

One thing I didn’t mention was when the Doctor called Belinda “Fred”, my first thought was of Romana…

I thought this episode was really strong and almost a return to form—until the fan scene. I just did not like it. While entertaining to an extent, it slowed the pacing of the episode to a halt and it felt, as others have put it, “fanwank-y”. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m not a huge fan of the meta aspect RTD seems to be focusing on. I think it works with Mrs. Flood but it was just too much here. To me, meta commentary reads as though there isn’t the faith in the story to be earnest and silly and pure science fiction without shoehorning in an in-universe disclaimer of “we know how predictable/ridiculous this is”. I totally think fans can be represented favorably in the show without them being meta caricatures (take Osgood for example).

Beyond that though, I really enjoyed the animation and Alan Cumming killed it with his voice acting. And the actual of discussion of segregation by our titular character was well overdo and addressed fairly responsibly. As others have said, Lux is probably my favorite of the pantheon so far, because it takes the simple concept of light and runs with it. Mr. Pye’s grief could have been explored slightly deeper but I thought that the reanimation of his wife through film reels was a very interesting story element. It is absolutely one of the stronger episodes in 15’s run, I just have my gripes.

Why assume when you can read the topic and see what people thought?

Not at all! I loved it too. Meta references and storytelling are always at risk of alienating some, but i adored it. This was the right story. The right way to do it. Funny, touching and just clever enough to not be off-putting for casuals.

Dare I? Yes, i dare.

De-light-ful.

Scenes (and stories) like that are a lux ury in an increasingly bland TV landscape.

Reading through all the comments here has actually made me like the episode more, because I’ll be honest I came away not really liking it, which I hate because I really wanted to like it. I think I’m really having to adjust to the more fourth wall break/deity type monsters of the new era. I’ve said this before, but I really think season one served as more than just a renumbering, it really is a soft reboot, and that comes with a tone change. It’s not bad, but it’s taking some time to get used to. I didn’t really like the fan scene. I don’t really have an issue with how the fans were portrayed. For me it just felt a bit too meta for Doctor Who, but reading the comments here I’ve sort of warmed up to it. The pacing sort of felt a bit off to me (other people have already mentioned it), and I thought Belinda did a really fast 180 to being ok with going on adventures and trusting the Doctor. I was sort of hoping they’d continue that conflict at least a little longer.

I don’t want to be a total downer, because there were definitely parts of the episode I like! Not a bad episode by any means, just sort of more out there I think, and I need some time to process it.

It doesn’t feel out of place for me because a commentary on audience fits in an episode about visual media, but I do think it would be more at home in a Land of Fiction episode. In a story that has such an outstanding element as living cartoon character, it feels a bit weird when your most meta scene isn’t about that.

It doesn’t bother me much, tho.

sorry was a tad busy last few hours.

I actually liked the pacing. It feelt like we got a little more time to breathe this episode. I think the first 15 minutes of the episode is one of the best start to an episode in the shows history.

Agreed, I thought the pacing was really excellent in this episode. Not too rushed not too slow.

yeah honestly pacing felt great with 44 minutes while Robot Revolution was 46 but had pacing issues.

It is okay; you don’t have to read the whole topic. But instead of assuming what people think, you can just say what you think. It feels a bit ignorant to just assume stuff when you can read that. There was a positive comment about it just a couple of comments before yours.
