Episode Discussion: Lucky Day

maybe Conrad is part of The Unholy Trinity

If anyone hasn’t seen the behind the scenes video, apparently some people, including Ncuti and Varada didn’t know about the twist during the read through and their reactions are absolutely priceless  https://youtu.be/JP0syD1g1e4

Also an incredibly interesting quote from Pete McTighe at aroung 9:50:

There’s no question that she goes to far when she unleashes the Shreak. It’s a calculated risk but it’s a very risky move and it’s beginning the story that has repercussions beyond this episode, beyond this season, even beyond this show.

This further leads me to believe that this episode is a soft backdoor pilot for the spinoff.

Maybe. But it was actually “Get off my World”. The same thing Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart said in Battlefield. The “I don’t accept your reality” line also seemed like a callback, similar to what 4 said in The Deadly Assassin.

I enjoyed this one, I thought the political messaging was smoother, I liked Ruby and Kate (though was it just me or does Kate look older than normal?). I also went in unspoiled and thought the twist with Conrad was well done. I don’t like the budding Kate/Colonel Ibrahim romance. I thought the mention of the Brig worked better in this instance than in previous ones.

Also, did anyone notice that Conrad met the Doctor and Belinda seventeen years ago? That’s the same amount of years in The Robot Revolution. I wonder if it’s conected?

That’s the second time that’s happened. 6 months for Belinda between being abducted and landing on the planet, and 6 months for Ruby between ep 1 and 2 of S1…

Oh and ‘She’s just watched The Wicker Man’ was a great line!

(I’m also sooo pleased they had Louise, Carla and Cherry all together in scenes throwing all that crap from last year about how insensitive it was to Carla bringing Louise in blah blah blah under the bus. That was some of the most ‘offended on other people’s behalf’ nonsense I’ve ever seen (and wasn’t even how it was presented on screen last year anyway).

Just watched this episode, and loved it.

I did call Conrad as being no good, but I was surprised with exactly how terrible he was. I’d thought he didn’t take the antidote because he wanted to get saved by the Doctor again or some such.

I do think this was a great pilot for The War Between the Land and the Sea.

I will say that I disagree with Shauny about the organization being unrealistic. But, you know, guys like this run my country and have been ransacking the government computers here for months. That “Sparky” guy even had a red cap. If this was here, UNIT would have been totally defunded, everyone fired, and the completely wrong people would have most of UNIT’s tech right now.

Admittedly, if the message wasn’t as close to home as it is, I might rate it a bit lower[1] and part of why I’m not really saying scores for this season is that I’m pretty much going to keep changing them until I see the whole season anyways…

  1. Since there were spots like the romance, or Kate continually hiring dumb people… ↩︎

Cherry is the best RTD2 character, change my mind

Quality’s a little lacking on my copy, but:

Reminds me of:

And the yellow lightning bolt just makes me think of SS Bolts. Tending to feel like that’s deliberate… (Well, okay, the bolt could be coincidence…)

Rewatched it, still peak. Might even take another look at Kerblam and Praxeus to see whether McTighe was visited by the Three Ghosts of Good Writing overnight or whether they’re really that bad

You know, interesting thing is this isn’t the first time UNIT has had trouble with Think Tank…

I didn’t go in with high hopes when watching the episode since I heard that it was going to focus on Ruby and her boyfriend which sounded boring. My worries got pushed aside when I saw Conrad experience the Doctor and Ruby dealing with the Shreek. I liked Ruby and Conrad together and I was shocked when he was revealed as the antagonist. The way he’s so insistent about his viewpoint and the lengths he would go to prove it makes him great and a little bit terrifying.

I liked the route that the episode took and I liked that it was a single person as the antagonist instead of an alien species. It proves that one normal person can be as good (or better) as a standard doctor who villain.

This has to be Kate’s greatest episode. I never had a problem with her before but this episode was incredible for her. The way she talked to Conrad and unleashed the Shreek on him to prove her point was amazing.

Rewatched this and it is a good episode. I think that it is the weakest of the season but still good. Conrad is great as a villain and I love that we get to see the struggles that the companion has after leaving the Doctor. I think that the part at UNIT is the part that drags the episode down. I just don’t buy that he can infiltrate that building in that way with only one insider. I also feel like it suffers from the same problem as Mrs Flood. We just had a toxic ex and I feel like this is a little too similar even if it is different. I am rating it 4/5 and if this is the low point of the season then this is really something special.

I watched this in a heightened state of anxiety. It seemed to tap into everything that I see is wrong with the world at the moment. Conrad’s ability to lie with ease and to switch from fightened little boy to smug superior elitist in a heartbeat struck me as so close to the way the powerful people in our world manipulate us with ease. I found it genuinely upsetting to watch and yet so believable. This is how the far right have become so powerful: by lying with ease and continually flipping the narrative. This was an extraordinary episode, carried so well again by Millie Gibson or “hot taser lady”. Ruth Madely had a few real zinger lines in it too.

I don’t know what role Mrs Flood has in all this. We seem to be getting teased towards her being the season big bad or something, but I have a niggling worry that, like last year’s Sutehk reveal, it might end up a damp squib. I am desperate to see Conrad get a proper comeuppance. He’s a truly hateful character.

My wife was disappointed at the relative lack of Ncuti. I have to admit, I did think that dropping the episode count to 8 would mean we wouldn’t have Doctor Lite episodes, but, when they’re as good as this one, I can’t really complain.

9.5/10. This is a very good season.

It’s kind of funny how two of my favourite shows that are currently running both did a “There are people who use social media to manipulate people into being angry” episodes in the same week. I find it a very poignant and imo underrepresented issue in society so I’m glad more shows are covering it.
