Episode Discussion: Lucky Day

Yeah, Toby and I were both like - what Think Tank from Robot? Kept expecting him to say Miss Winters was his mum  .

I actually find it more comforting when DW isn’t always ā€œcomfortableā€ , knowing that problems are getting acknowledged

I almost expected the Doctor to drop Conrad on some weird scary planet to prove to him that he’s wrong and punish him.

I have to admit that I find it hard to believe that Conrad would be left so many years in prison (until he’s 49 and he’s in his 20s ?) for what he’s done. He injured people but he didn’t kill anyone, did he?

Didn’t he kill somebody at UNIT? Like that one Person that helped him to get Access to the Tower?

I thought they said he would recover? Or maybe it was the soldier

I didn’t take it as him staying in prison for that whole time, but getting out, not changing his ways, and eventually getting in more trouble

Oh, they did at the end, didn’t they? Probably must have mistaken it with something else then, my bad! Apologize for that!

I guess you could say it’s your… lucky day!

I’ll show myself out…

100%.

True. I thought the middle section was paced way too quickly (and the ending too slowly).

Just went and rewatched the scene and the Doctor does say ā€œyou die in a prison cellā€. Granted, he could get out but do something else that puts him back in prison. He says A prison cell, not ā€œthisā€ prison cell, so…

I makes sense actually, for the Doctor to hint at ā€œyou’re on the wrong side and you’ll stay thereā€

This was good stuff but probably going to end up as a 3/5. I REALLY liked the twist (and it seems that, yet again, my opposition to any sort of leaks/set photos/spoilers is proven right - I really don’t know why anyone wants to ruin the stories, repeatedly, like this). I thought Jonah Hauer-King played the switch really well and the change in tone of Conrad and all his friends was pretty chilling.

I liked how we got to see a bit of a missing adventure with 15 and Ruby and Millie Gibson was great again. But there was a bit too much standing around at the end and, as others have said, even with a mole inside UNIT, Conrad getting in did seem way too easy (and not particularly inspiring confidence in the organisation).

Also, my eldest and I thought the school tour of UNIT at the start was bloody hilarious! Obviously a recruitment drive…

And Trinity Wells was a fun cameo.

Not sure this will end up as one of my favourite Doctor-lite episodes but it was a solid story with a good twist and change of direction partway through that didn’t drop the ball.

(I’m totally over the Mrs Flood bits though. As I said last week, this better have one hell of a pay off!)

I’d say this was the episode I was the least excited for. Next week, however, looks intriguing.

Today I’ve seen a LOT of people calling out/discussing the guy that goes around to every single filming location. He posted a very parasocial tweet or insta story or something and people have been discussing it, trying to make out he’s mates with Millie and Jonah? I’m with you, wish this would stop and it would stop ruining surprises!

edit: this is the tweet

"I don’t accept your reality doctor, now get out of my world" Conrad should be careful with his WISHES :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Absolute cringe tweet. Not familiar with this person as I tend to avoid Doctor Who stuff on social media.

I decided to block/mute him a while back, because his obsession with going to every single filming location as they were filming and spoiling stuff just was too much. He seems to think he’s best mates with the cast and crew.. they probably think hes a pest! Sadly so far this season set leaks have spoiled the God/Harbinger twist, and Conrad being a villain with the monster fake out twist. Luckily only really one more set leak for this season.

If someone wants to visit locations and spoil stories for themselves, that’s their business. But posting it on social media is a) just showing off and b) deliberately spoiling other people’s enjoyment. Frankly, I have no time for people like that and the whole ā€˜I hang out with these guys’ stuff is obviously exaggerated.

I am very excited about next week’s episode, Inua Ellams is well known enough to feature as a set of bonus questions on University Challenge which is fun

WAIT a minute.

The title ā€œThe Reality Warā€ feels a bit more pointed now…
