The Life Bringer! - 6/10 (Spoilers)

An interesting take on classical mythology, that ends up devolving into Just a bit of a boring runaround.

I really like what we get here of this take on the Greek Gods, giant, immortal scientists with some incredible powers, intending to create the perfect, peaceful race, with Prometheus, wanting to give humanity free will.

I love just the scale of this, the image of the temple, showing just how incredibly vast it is, acting as a complete city, even though it doesn’t look like that from a distance. The how the ageless nature of the gods is communicated, Prometheus seeming completely unphased by having to knock against a wall for thousands of years to escape, and where we originally find him, chained to a rock that was once a mountain.

There’s also the ambiguity of where these ‘gods’ fit in, if The Doctor found Prometheus on Earth, if he brought him there at the end, if none of this was connected to Earth at all. It leaves itself open ended, which is definitely appreciated.

Unfortunately, while the setting is well fleshed out, the actual plot of this story itself ends up being very standard Doctor Who fare. Running around some corridors, escaping being killed at the last second thanks to K9 and the sonic, etc etc. I think more interactions with the other gods could have done this story a lot of good, but as it is, well, it’s fine.

I’ve just finished reading ‘The Stolen TARDIS’ from Doctor Who Weekly issues 9 through 11, and I thought it was a decent little Time Lord tale. 6.75/10.

I’ve been reading a few of the Eighth Doctor comics featuring Izzy, Fey and now Destrii. They’re so good!! This really is such a wonderful corner of Who I haven’t properly explored till now. Beautiful Freak has been especially amazing!

Beautiful Freak is amazing!

My favorite from this run is a tie between The Glorious Dead and Children of the Revolution.

I’m finally getting around to 8’s DWM run, and it’s brilliant so far.

Endgame had a decent start, with a great finale. The Glorious Dead had a great start, with an incredible finale. Oblivion’s had an incredible start so far, and I can’t wait to see where this goes, especially with all the good things I’ve heard about The Flood

I’ve just finished reading ‘Daleks Versus the Martians’ from the Doctor Who Magazine Spring Special 1996. This story was okay - I quite like the artwork. Hmm…I’ll say 6.75/10.

I’ve just read Dr. Who & the Mechonoids from Doctor Who Magazine issue #578. Yes, it’s a rushed story, but oh, how I love Susan in it. It can have a 7/10.

I’m planning to save the ‘Daft Dimension’ and ‘Doctor Who?’ comics for later, so it appears I’ve finished the Cushing Doctor for now. Well, except for tracking down the Argentinian comic adaptation of the second film…

…which I did find and have now read. It’s fine - 6.25/10. Dr. Who, you will be missed.

I’ve been continuing the DWM comics with City of the Damned and Timeslip. I’m surprised that these early comics are so good! More thoughts in the club threads when we get there.

Next up is a familiar story called The Star Beast…

I’ve just finished reading the four Doom’s Day stories in Doctor Who Magazine issue #592. While not quite as engaging as the initial short story, these are still enjoyable bits of fun. My ratings:

Target Selected: 6.25/10
The Plastic Population: 7/10
High Noon in Hollywood: 6.75/10
The Horn of a Dilemma: 7.25/10

Thought I’d post in here since I recently finished my read through of the Eighth Doctor’s comic runs, and his DWM run really blew me away! I’m not a comics person normally at all, but this era, particularly as collected in The Glorious Dead and Oblivion, is some of the best Doctor Who I’ve ever come across, with Izzy Sinclair having become one of my all-time favorite companions!

The Fallen and The Glorious Dead are my two favorite individual stories of the entire run, but the arc from Ophidius to Oblivion is equally noteworthy for how well it’s done, though I found less individual stories stood out as much. I will highlight Me and My Shadow, Uroboros, and Oblivion, though, as well as Happy Deathday and The Company of Thieves from The Glorious Dead collection. Then there are also some great stories in the other volumes as well: Fire and Brimstone, The Land of Happy Endings, and The Flood come to mind especially.

Specifically the character work that Scott Gray pulls off for the Eighth Doctor and Izzy is so damn impressive. I can’t praise that enough.

I would have a few other things to say, but I can’t figure out how to use spoiler indicators here anymore lol, so that’ll be all for now :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The Fallen and The Glorious Dead are breathtaking, but my favorite may be Children of the Revolution. I love Kataphobus. I love that story. The last pages are a punch to the gut

I still have to read the other Scott Gray works (woth 11th, 12th e 13th), but I’m sure I’ll love it. After 8th I just trust the guy to blow me away

I liked the concepts and a lot of other aspects of Children of the Revolution, and the art was incredibly gorgeous, but I really disliked the ending. It felt to me like a big waste, storytelling-wise. Also the trope of “let’s make the Black characters the intolerant ones” always rubs me the wrong way in general, and Doctor Who in particular has done that a few too many times.

I’ve been reading The Glorious Dead collection recently, and just finished the titular story. Absolutely blown away. So much going on, so much character and action and heart – Izzy’s letter to Max was beautiful, the skipping between timelines and universes delightful (the noir! The Rani is In!!) and it’s a gorgeous ending for Kroton. Amazing stuff!!

It’s one of my favorites too! Some of the best Doctor Who has ever been, I swear. I love Kroton, he is my man!
