Hello sir have you heard the word of the 8th Doctor DWM strips?

I will probably do Ten and Eleven first. But maybe after that.
With a * that there is two DWM original characters that first appeared in the Fifth Doctor run so reading The Tides of Time and Stars Fell on Stockbridge could be fun for a better appreciation of their return, however it isn’t required reading for the 8th ones.
It’s required reading overall tho because they are just two great stories
A part of me just want to start from the beginning and reading all of them in order. But that is a big task…
It’s very rewarding tho! (And what I am doing right now. Two left from 6 then that hugeeeeeee Seven era waits for me)
I have mixed feelings on Lunar Lagoon but I love how 4-Dimensional Vistas pick it up. Not my favorite from Five’s run because I find the art much weaker compared to the earlier stories, but it’s good.
Plus it leads to that ending in The Moderator, Five’s face after something something happens is forever ingrained in my brain
Just read the latest one. We need to put it on the site @shauny. It was okay but nothing special. 3/5
I’ve already got shauny to add this!
Just search for it and it should come up!
Just read FAQ. It was just a bit much and I did not enjoy it.
I finally read Liberation of the Daleks after having it on my bookshelf for almost a year. It was not that good. It was long, kind of messy, and not that interesting. It also felt like they did not capture the 14th Doctor’s character (which is not that strange since this is before the specials), and I found the guest cast not very interesting. The art was good.
Or is it? He’s just a redressed Ten…
In this, he is neither.
I enjoyed it, though I can see how it’s not for everyone.
Been thinking about these comics again. So many moments I absolutely adore
The whole Crimson Hand arc is fantastic, the only comic collection i have actually bought as a physical book
In episode 2 of An Unearthly Child, the Doctor has a pipe. That’s why he and the others are captured by the cavemen to make fire.
A pretty fun setup for a story… shame it doesn’t live up to that.
The basic premise of a world where virtual reality through dreaming has become the norm for entertainment is pretty fun. There could be some really interesting worldbuilding done with the economics of it, what exactly the relationship between the dreamers and their ‘pets’ are like, the relationship between Four and the family he here who he’s met before. All of these are are alluded to in this story, but non get the time of day though, and instead we’re thrust right into the middle of an ‘invasion’.
The dream worlds we see are beautiful, and there’s a real sense of danger to our characters in them… but when we get out of that world, things start falling apart for me. The ‘pets’ coming together to form a giant devil not only feels very silly and out of nowhere to me, but also implies a level of consciousness to the creatures, which are mentioned to be native to this world, and is just completely overlooked. The method to defeat them also feels like a bit of an ass-pull, they do set it up a little with not wanting to go over the river, but even then, it feels out of nowhere.
And finally Sharon’s departure… I mean, I guess it lives up to a lot of classic companion’s departures. Like those it’s out of absolutely nowhere, and because of a man she met like three hours ago. It just doesn’t work.
In short, there’s a lot I want to like about this story, but it consistently fumbles the bag or overlooks every single one of them. I feel it could’ve done better with another issue or two in the magazine.
The problem with Sharon’s ending - besides they doing nothing interesting with her since her introduction - is that it’s so freaking creepy. She is not an adult! She just aged really, really fast! This is not a coming of age story, because she didn’t develop into a mature person because she didn’t have time to! It should’ve been extremely traumatic, she probably would somewhat not feel much comfortable in her body, and it’s crazyyyy the Doctor let her stay behind for a relationship with a guy she met five minutes ago.
She is not Leela! Leela was an adult!
We do get a story arc much later in the DWM that does all of this but actually good, so there is that.
