Colourised (and Cut Down) Doctor Who

I didn’t forget it, I pretended it didn’t exist because I’m not a fan of the story  but you’re right about the Mechanus scenes probably looking glorious in colour!

I’m with you on the quality of the story itself.
If it wasn’t a companion departure serial it is not one I think I would revisit

How can anyone dislike a story with Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mary Celeste, Morton Dill, the Mechanoids AND an almost indistinguishable robot double of the Doctor?

The Chase is glorious.

And yes, it would be brilliant to see it colourised!

Don’t get my hopes up like this!!!

I would love to see a Two story in colour though, I feel like a lot of fans (and honestly a little bit me included) pass over him too much because there are so many missing eps, but he is utterly wonderful

I’m rewatching The Chase at the moment and that’s definitely one story that would really benefit from being cut down. The Mary Celeste sequence goes on for ages and yet so little happens that you could almost cut it entirely. In fact you could probably say the same about most of the places they visit in that story. I definitely think you could cut that down to 1 hour 15 without losing too much of the actual story or the really good and fun character moments.

Our own opinions as fans aside (I happened to really enjoy “The Daleks in COLOUR!” but I do see why some have issues with it), this is fantastic news. I did wonder how it would go down with the wider public. Well enough, it would seem, to warrant further investment.

As far as I’m concerned, that can only help maintain DWs visibility (ad especially elevate the visibility of B&W stories that, let’s face it, outside of fandom probably have little interest otherwise).

Not a clue, and I really don’t mind whatever they choose. I’m guessing the “The Dalek Invasion of Earth” is a strong candidate as it’s most likely to be a crowd pleaser, but there are plenty of other strong candidates. I’d suggest “The Time Meddler” but given that it was featured recently in “Tales of the TARDIS”, it’s unlikely to be that.

“The Sensorites” could benefit from a spruce up and a trim. Sufficient visual interest for casual viewers. Episode 1 is very strong (in my opinion) and it’s only later that the story loses its way a little. A slimmed down, spruced up and colourised “Sensorites” could work wonders!

I agree. It’s a somewhat shonky but fun story. Cutting it down would enable some of the more … embarrassing bits… to be cut but leave a vibrant and colourful story with a pretty impressive final episode.

I agree exactly. I’d love a Second Doctor story in colour.

I would actually love to have The Dominators in colour.
Quarks! In Colour!

Still think it’s kinda funny that the Doctor has fought a robot double of himself more than once…

I don’t have many opinions about what episode they should colourise next but I sincerely hope that they reconsider the approach that they take with the soundtrack in comparison to the Daleks in Colour.

Having a ‘cinematic’ score that is so entirely divorced from the style of the original radiophonic workshop soundtracks was incredibly jarring to me and I wish for future releases to either retain the original soundtrack or that the new soundtrack be closer in style to it.

See, I’m going to be controversial here, but I enjoyed the soundtrack. It’s important to make these episodes seem new and fresh to younger audiences and the soundtrack is part of that. It also makes the final product more distinct from the original, meaning both can still be enjoyed in different ways. I can see it wasn’t to everyone’s taste, but those colourised cut downs are a different way to enjoy B&W stories that would otherwise, let’s face it, turn off many younger viewers. Much as I love Carey’s soundtrack to The Daleks, the tempo is not to the tastes of many people today.

As long as the originals are still available to enjoy, an aural reimagining is fine with me.

I will be happy with whatever it is - as long as they don’t do that horrible fast-edit, overlapping-dialogue technique again. I had no idea what was going on.

I’m with you there.
The music fitted what they clearly were going for, my issues lies purely with the editing choices made. But I suppose it is a thankless task to edit out 100 minutes of a 175 minute video and make a cohesive and compelling narrative of what is remaining.:slightly_smiling_face:

Another gripe I have with it is that in my mind, Barbara’s shirt was blue, so it looks very, very wrong in pink

I don’t want to keep harping on about that escape montage, but I will do so anyway
Everything went haywire in the show just around then, and several very important moments and scenes were just glossed over.

I’ve previously called it a dog’s breakfast, and I absolutely stand by that - but as long as that elusive “general public” enjoys it, then keep on making them by all means🙂

It seemed to me like a moment where the people making it lost sight of what they took for granted but first-time viewers wouldn’t know. Like, what do you subconsciously know from knowing the story, that you don’t actually realize is no longer there because your brain fills it in? I watched the colour version first, so I was genuinely confused by what was going on. (Though it must also be said that I generally have a hard time following action-heavy scenes.) Maybe if I rewatched it now, having seen the original, it would make more sense. But then, isn’t the point to introduce it to people who haven’t seen the original?

Perhaps with overarching scenes with 15 and Ruby, like a Tales Of The TARDIS?

Colors on something that was black and white initially are always tricky, too, because since the colors weren’t actually going to show up on the final product, places would go by what looked good in black and white, not necessarily what the colors were actually supposed to be, so you can’t really always go by what the actual costumes or props colors were.

Case in point, the Addams Family home interior…

They talk about this in the making-of segment. Apparently the TARDIS console was blue in reality because that was the best way to make it appear bright silver on film.
