Big Finish Cover Art Gallery

You are not alone. I need this to be a thing!

I LOVE this cover! Wow! Reeks of the Hinchliffe/Holmes era. The cover seems to unite the aesthetic of season 13/14 with peak Harry Sullivan from season 12 and “Zygons”.

The big one was The Annihilators, that was a whole boxset fakeout cover

I know I’ve already mentioned how much I love the hand-drawn and painted covers Christopher Naylor has created.

But considering he did the artwork for ‘Conspiracy of Raven’, I sincerely hope he is now the resident cover artist for the 1DAs and 2DAs…

Think we can all agree he’s a damn sight better than Gironi!

I quite like the first one but don’t like the second one at all!

The first one is great, but as I’ve said before, the second looks like dodgy fan art. One that is made by a well-meaning fan, but leaves something to be desired.

I also much prefer the first. I think the second suffers from a) too many characters and b) the lack of a beautiful atmospheric background image.

That said, I agree with @PalindromeRose that Naylor is a fantastic artist. When he gets it right (as with Demon Song) his covers are pretty much spot on for me.

Since I’ve just finished listening to “Ravenous: Series 3”, I thought I’d comment on the covers. Surely among the least inspiring and most dull covers Big Finish have produced. I mean, each one just strikes me as a collage of the principle actors involved. Whilst the Doctor and River do appear in character, most of the others just seem to be pics of the actors themselves rather than evoking the character. These covers leave me rather cold, I’m afraid. They also pose a challenge for me in visualising the aesthetic of each story. I find visual cues from the covers to be very helpful (it is one of the more frustrating traits of my neurodivergence that I need visual cues) but have pretty much nothing to go on with these. Some Big Finish covers are works of beauty but these are (for me at least) beyond meh! :disappointed:

Oh if we’re talking bad covers? I loathe the ones for 8DAs season 1. It’s literally just “hey look at all our big guest stars!”

Thankfully this stops being the case season 2 onwards.

For the Gallery of Shame, I’d like to nominate The Fires of Vulcan. AKA ‘Is that a cardboard cutout of Mel?’

I’ve wondered this too. It looks like it was originally set in a different font (it’s not even in small caps and is slightly bolder than the rest of the type) and they somehow missed changing his name back to the regular one.

I love the detail that on What Lies Inside, the Doctor and Liv are looking at the viewer while Helen looks away, and on Connections it’s vice versa.

“We have Bonnie Langford as Mel at home”
The Bonnie Langford as Mel at home:

No More Lies still looks good though. Ironically, I think the worst is Blood of the Daleks, part 1.

This reminds me of the total graphic design glow-up of Max Warp for the vinyl reissue:

I love how the new one mimics the actual Top Gear branding. Pity it was only for vinyl, though, because I think it would look even better on CD packaging. Real 00s hours.

In the Bleak Midwinter too.

As I said further up it is how he chooses to have his name in credits. It’s the same in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Oh wow! I already liked the cover of Max Warp but those vinyl ones are incredible! Perfectly nail the vibe as you say thanks to mimicking the branding!

Think this new Bernice cover deserves a place in the hall of shame.

We’re talking a hall of shame for Big Finish covers and nobody’s brought up Renaissance of the Daleks? The most boring cover in existence?

I’ve seen a few people rag on this cover but I quite like it - I do have a bit of a crush on Lisa Bowerman though so that might be why… :smirk:

I didn’t think it was too bad either - then again, who doesn’t fancy Lisa Bowerman just a teeny weeny bit…?

I quite like it - aside from the angle on the Drahvin’s (?) neck. I wish I could remember what I was looking at yesterday that had horrendous head Photoshopping.

The cover so boring that I actually forgot it existed! I genuinely can’t imagine what they were thinking when they came up with that.
