Hmmm, nice little thread here that I hadn’t noticed. I’m not going to rank but I will pick out four different Doctor/Companion combinations that I find wonderful in different ways:
Third Doctor & Jo Grant: This pairing was fantastic, so full of warmth and joy. I love that Jo showed real development over her time with the Doctor. The closeness of their bond really was underlined by one of the most touching companion departure scenes in the whole of Doctor Who.
Fourth Doctor & Romana II:
I could easily have listed the Fourth Doctor with Sarah Jane or Leela, but I seldom see as much love for Romana II yet I adore their chemistry together. Unlike Romana I (who I also enjoy), Romana II was often presented as an equal to the Doctor. A pairing like no other, and I loved it so much.
Tenth Doctor/Fourteenth Doctor & Donna Noble: Yes, she counts for both Doctors and the reasons she works so well are the same in both cases (and, let’s face it, he’s ostensibly the same Doctor, though with a whole bag more world-weariness). Donna is simply sublime! Their friendship shines through and she really stands out as a believable character. She’s fab!
Thirteenth Doctor & Yaz: (How lovely to be on a forum where I can say I’m fan of the Thirteenth and Yaz without ridicule from the usual quarters) I sometimes think people miss just how good Jodie and Mandip were. Often subtly played, their relationship was lovely. I really love Yaz as a character. She’s capable and pro active, a great people person and a truly loyal friend. I do agree that there was much more scope for her than we often saw on TV. This is something that really excites me about the upcoming 13th Doctor audios. I’m looking forward to them being able to give more time for Yaz and more prominence to her as companion.

This is an interesting thread, but I also just created a similar one yesterday: A General Companion Discussion Thread. Should they be merged or kept separate?

Kept separate. This is about combinations specifically.

I’ll look in on that thread at some point, @DarthGallifrey. Sounds good and I’ve plenty to say (when I have time to think). But, yes, this thread is about combinations. The pairings I picked because of their dynamic. For example, I really love the dynamic between the Ninth Doctor and Rose, but not at all between the Tenth Doctor and Rose. A similar point but different in its own way is that I love Mary Tamm as Romana I just as much as I love Lalla Ward’s Romana II, but I prefer the pairing of Four and Romana II.
