A General Companion Discussion Thread

This is a discussion thread for discussing all the companions of the Doctor from any and every medium. Discuss your favorites, discuss your least favorites, ask questions, tell everyone why “x” is the best/worst companion ever. Who had the best arc? Who had the worst? Who should return? Who hasn’t Big Finish saved/ruined? Anything goes and rants are encouraged. Have fun.

Alright, big question.

My favourite companion would probably be Ace, but specifically Big Finish’s take on her. Her arc from Dragonfire to the stuff with Hex is absolutely magnificent and Sophie Aldred is a powerhouse performer.

Plus, Hex just so happens to be in my top five too, his dynamic with Ace is great.

From the revival, my favourite companion would be Donna for reasons I don’t need to state because everybody else has already said them a thousand times.

Valerie from the 11DAs has quickly usurped pretty much every Moffat companion in my rankings, mostly because Safiyya Ingar is so incredible in the role (just put her in the show already, Russell).

Some honorable mentions would be Romana II, Amy and Rory, Jamie, Evelyn and Jo. Plus the Brigadier but whether or not he’s a companion or just a recurring character is up for debate.

As for least favourites, my read through of the EDAs is currently being hampered by how characterless Sam is - there is just nothing to her. But, I am entering the Finding Sam arc, so I hope the series decides to actually do something with her. Funny though how it predicted the formula for companions that would plague the next quarter of a century of TV.

And then I’ll just put all of the Chibnall companions at the very bottom of my list. They are all personality-less companion shaped voids and pretty much offer next to nothing to most of their stories, the worst of all being Dan, who’s entire character is just “wok”. Graham would probably be my favourite, but when the comic relief is your most interesting character, you’ve ■■■■■■ up.

Although, I will praise Chibnall for the decision to have a cast of entirely comprised of cardboard cutouts as his TARDIS team, it’s certainly a bold move.

Amy Pond is the snidest, most insufferably smug companion ever in Doctor Who. She refers to her husband as ‘moron’ and suchlike, and on the eve of their wedding day, attempted to seduce The Doctor. I mean, what was all that about?

Just my opinion, of course, but I never really warmed to her. This is surprising as Karen Gillan always comes across as utterly delightful in interviews.

Poor old Adric would be my least favourite classic companion. For all the talk of him being ‘difficult’ and ‘interesting’, he was really just a pain in the harris! I don’t really blame Matthew Waterhouse (who’s written some terrific Big Finish audiobooks), but rather the dialogue and turncoat characteristics he was given.

Favourites? Lalla Ward remains the ultimate for me. She played Romana as imperious, silly, aristocratic, charming, brave and to my younger self all those years ago - peerlessly posh!
She’s gone a little quiet as far as Big Finish are concerned. I understand she lives at n Hong Kong now. I hope she’s okay.

Finally, for ‘nu Who’, it would have to be Yaz. Just a lovely, lovely understated character, perfectly played. Her often unhappy past and her feelings for The Doctor are featured subtly and movingly, never saturating the stories, just adding a little extra colour to them. Lovely Yaz - can’t wait to hear what audio has in store for her.

Currently listening to Series 13 of the Fourth Doctor Adventures from Big Finish (in amongst other things) and I’m wondering what other people think of Naomi Cross. Do you like her as a companion? Does she work better with Tom or Sylvester? Do you think we’ll see more of her and Harry with Seven?

Clara Oswald. I love her and her arc. There’s never a dull moment. I don’t fully understand why she’s hated.

My least favorite companion is Nardole. I always found him annoying and that he never really did anything.

My favourite companion is always the one I’ve seen last, so right now that would be Romana II.
One I’m especially fond of is Jo Grant, she’s just so delightful. I also think Leela is unbelievably cool.
From New Who my (current) favourites would be Ruby and Yaz, I think. Donna’s great too.

But really I love them all.

I’m intrigued by Naomi Cross because she’s across a lot of recent BF ranges and yet I’ve heard next to nothing about her from fandom. I don’t know if she’s liked or disliked which I can’t say for any other BF original companions. Even before I listened to Constance Clarke’s stories, I knew she’d been well received; likewise Helen and even Nerys Hughes character/companion from the more recent 4th Doctor stories.

What I’ve heard of her (Storm of the Sea Devils and the first Seventh Doctor boxset) I’ve enjoyed, but she’s not leaving a major impression on me. Also, I sort of understand the decision to release the Harry/Naomi arc out of sequence, but at the same time (not having heard the whole arc) think they could’ve just held everything and released it in order. Instead we got middle, end for now, beginning.

Sorry I am not a fan of Naomi Cross quite a dull companion from what I have heard of her. Sometimes I think BF love creating new companions. Wiith Naomi & Harry I don’t get why they have introduced them to us in such a silly timey wimey way.
