Just an okay story imo, classic Doctor Who romp and a nice way to spend 1,5 hours. 7/10
This one made me wish there was a historical about a film director in the Whoniverse. We have so many great stories about writers (I’m not complaying!), but I can’t think about a single one about film directors. Doctor meeting Buster Keaton or George Méliès could be fun
Honestly, I found this one kind of boring - it’s a pretty standard Gatiss fare if I remember properly. Enjoyable enough at the time but not really anything that sticks about after. Might give it a relisten, I think I was sad that I didn’t like this one very much
Doctor Who does War of the Worlds. Also, Doctor Who is happening whilst Orson Welles is working on War of the Worlds.
There some comedy moments that work quite well, like the Doctor wondering why his travelling companions seem to want to leave him, and standing on a sewer as he says that something smells rotten.
Something on the voice effects that’s used in this episode is causing a high-pitched buzz, which is rather annoying.
The cliffhanger to part one is… Eh… Not great.
I do like that part of the solution is broadcasting War of the Worlds to the invaders.
I listened to a part of this a few months ago. It came with one of the free DWM downloads that are now on Big Finish’ website. Maybe it was because then i was a little more new to this, but it sounded a lot more exciting than now. I remember thinking oohh that sounds interesting and dark and fun maybe i can listen to the full thing one day and that day was today, yay. It’s ok.
I find around the end when The war of the worlds actually becomes relevant a lot of fun, but before that, the entire story is just kinda happening. It’s perfectly good, just not particularly memorable. Could’ve made more use of the actual aliens. I feel like it takes a while for them to come in. Instead, our first half is the Doctor Sherlock-Holmessing around, which like, it’s not bad, i really don’t think it is, but it’s just not as interesting to me. Neither is the political stuff which was very basic. Still a fine story. Just not the greatness i anticipated it to be months ago lol. 7/10
This is a fine enough early Eighth Doctor audio. The concept of having War of the Worlds happening during a Who story is fun, but I recall that I found most of it to be pretty predictable and forgettable. It’s not bad, but nothing to write home about. 6/10
A lot of fun! There’s a lot going on and in parts I got a bit confused as to what was going on (happens all the time with audios for me though) but very enjoyable. Kind of wish Charley had gotten to do a bit more
Charming, but I wish I could dig it much more. From other Gatiss entries this one places a bit higher, as always Gatiss gets a pretty cool idea, but the execution feels a bit lackluster. Our leads still have so much chemistry that I can’t really say it’s bad, just kinda lackluster.
It was off the back of seeing Charley Pollard live on stage for The Stuff of Legend so I was super excited to get back into some Eight + Charley audios.
But no, I really didn’t like it. Maybe it will improve with repeat playing. But those accents! That predictable plot! So much time focused on annoying gangsters and not enough on our TARDIS team. Charley barely does anything. Ugh!
Oh I’ve just listened to the first part, no wonder my mind has erased this story completely from my mind - the accents!!
It’s like a story filled with Frobishers and Tallulahs (Three Ls and an H)
And there are three more parts… sigh
Just finished it.
The accents and the sound effects drag this story down quite a lot for me.
But the idea to use Orson Welles’ The War of the World to repel a simultaneous alien invasion is a pretty good one.
Plus India Fisher and Paul McGann are really hitting their stride acting chemistry wise.
Listened to this one today. Is it a masterpiece with a brilliant plot and an outstanding guest cast that will be forever touted as the best thing Big Finish has ever produced? No, of course not. That’s next week’s release. What this is, is just fun. New York gangsters, Orson Wells’ famous broadcast of War of the Worlds, incompetent aliens running a protection racket, dodgey accents. This is just plain fun. You’re not supposed to take it too seriously. While it’s not a favorite, and not one that always comes to mind, I still had a lot of fun with it. McGann and Fisher sound like they’re having a blast with it. Actually, the whole cast is having fun hamming it up for this one. And the accents are fine and don’t really bother me like they do in Minuet in Hell. Anyway, I give it a solid 4/5.
I’m with you on this. I like the elements in play and the general setting but the story nevercreally takes off for me. I, too, found this disappointing.
